Nas<\/a> discussed the origins of his long-awaited rarities collection, The Lost Tapes 2<\/em><\/a>, during an interview with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show<\/a><\/em> Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The compilation arrives July 19th, 17 years after the highly acclaimed first installment<\/a>, which collected unreleased tracks from Nas\u2019 1999 album I Am\u2026<\/em><\/a> and 2001\u2019s Stillmatic<\/em><\/a>. While the follow-up was expected soon after, the project was repeatedly delayed and as Nas explained, \u201cI really didn\u2019t know what to do these songs because they weren\u2019t really the songs that I wanted to put on a record. They were just sitting there and I always thought I\u2019d come back to them and finish them up later, but it never happened. So I\u2019m sitting here with all these songs starting to pile up and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh I did a Lost Tapes<\/em> album 17 years ago, I think it\u2019s time for another one.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Lost Tapes 2<\/em> collects unreleased tracks made during the sessions for 2006\u2019s Hip-Hop is Dead<\/em><\/a>, 2008\u2019s Untitled<\/em><\/a>, 2012\u2019s Life Is Good<\/em><\/a> and 2018\u2019s Nasir<\/em><\/a>. Nas noted that the track list isn\u2019t in any particular chronological order, adding, \u201cYou kinda gotta guess like, \u2018What year did he make this one?\u2019 Some of the songs are like 10 years old, 12 years old, and some of them are as early as a year-and-a-half ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, Nas spoke about his upcoming tour<\/a> with Mary J. Blige, his work on a hip-hop museum in the Bronx that will potentially break ground this year and living through hip-hop\u2019s dramatic shift from underground to mainstream. \u201cI thought it would [get to this point],\u201d Nas said, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t know it would be a reality. I was hopeful that it would turn out to be this way and that I would be around to see it happen \u2014 and thank God I am, because it\u2019s a great time to be a hip-hop artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
