Neil Young<\/a> has only performed \u201cMotion Pictures (For Carrie)\u201d once \u2014 at New York\u2019s Bottom Line in 1974 \u2014 but that hasn\u2019t stopped artists from covering the gut-wrenching On the Beach<\/em> track for years. Singer-songwriter Steve Gunn<\/a> released a rendition of the song via Amazon Music, a day before the album\u2019s 45th anniversary.<\/p>\n

Gunn\u2019s cover gives the track a funereal touch. His stark, husky voice looms over the lyrics: \u201cWell, all those people, they think they got it made\/ But I wouldn\u2019t buy, sell, borrow or trade\/Anything I have\/ to be like one of them\/I\u2019d rather start all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young probably hasn\u2019t performed \u201cMotion Pictures (Song for Carrie)\u201d in 45 years because of its intense subject matter \u2014 the song is about his disintegrating relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress. He wrote the track in a hotel room at L.A.\u2019s Sunset Marquis, where Young was recording On the Beach<\/em>. \u201cMe and Ben [Keith] and Neil were sittin\u2019 in Ben\u2019s room,\u201d guitarist Rusty Kershaw recalled in Jimmy McDonough\u2019s Young biography Shakey<\/em>. \u201cNeil started hummin\u2019 somethin\u2019, and I started palyin\u2019 along with the melody on the steel. Neil picked up the pen and just wrote the words right then.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gunn recorded the cover in Brooklyn in May. \u201c\u2018Motion Pictures\u2019 perfectly captures the wistful anxiety of \u2018living in between\u2019 the real world and being on the road,\u201d Gunn said in a statement. \u201cLike Neil, I also find watching TV in hotel rooms inspiring.\u201d Gunn is currently on tour in support of his album The Unseen in Between. <\/em><\/p>\n
