{"id":2446718,"date":"2019-07-24T12:46:17","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T18:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=863071"},"modified":"2019-07-24T12:46:17","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T18:46:17","slug":"meek-mills-2008-conviction-overturned-new-trial-granted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/meek-mills-2008-conviction-overturned-new-trial-granted\/","title":{"rendered":"Meek Mill\u2019s 2008 Conviction Overturned, New Trial Granted"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/meek.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pennsylvania Superior Court has thrown out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/meek-mill\/\" id=\"auto-tag_meek-mill\" data-tag=\"meek-mill\">Meek Mill<\/a>\u2019s 2008 conviction on drug and gun charges, granting the rapper a new trial and judge based on new evidence of alleged police corruption. \u201cWe conclude the after-discovered evidence is of such a strong nature and character that a different verdict will likely result at a retrial,\u201d the judges wrote in court documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The unanimous three-judge opinion on Wednesday also overturned Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/meek-mill-receives-up-to-four-years-in-prison-for-violating-probation-123559\/\">parole violation ruling<\/a> that resulted in Mill\u2019s five-month prison stint in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a statement, Mill wrote that he\u2019s \u201cecstatic\u201d about the outcome.<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019d like to thank the Pennsylvania Superior Court judges for their wisdom and transparency in reviewing my case, unanimously overturning my conviction and granting me a new trial,\u201d he said. \u201cThe past 11 years have been mentally and emotionally challenging, but I\u2019m ecstatic that justice prevailed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He continued, \u201cThis positive outcome wouldn\u2019t have been possible without the support of my family, my attorneys, Jay-Z, Desiree Perez, Michael Rubin, the Philadelphia District Attorney\u2019s office and my supporters who have stood with me through the ups and downs. Unfortunately, millions of people are dealing with similar issues in our country and don\u2019t have the resources to fight back like I did. We need to continue supporting them. I\u2019m committed to working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/jay-z-meek-mill-reform-alliance-criminal-justice-783228\/\">my team at the REFORM Alliance<\/a> to change these outdated laws and fix our broken criminal justice system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The rapper also shared a news report of the legal ordeal on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B0Tk2yBgZ2w\/?utm_source=ig_embed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>, writing, \u201cAs of right now I\u2019m not on probation and I am not a felon anymore. Today was mega!!!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rubin, co-chair of the REFORM Alliance, said in a statement that he\u2019s \u201cthrilled\u201d that Mill has been granted a new trial and, \u201cfor the first time in his adult life, he\u2019s no longer on probation and has no criminal record.\u201d He continued, \u201cTime after time, I\u2019ve watched the criminal justice system railroad Meek, but through it all, he\u2019s handled this adversity with extraordinary strength and poise. But the fight isn\u2019t over \u2014 there are still millions of people unfairly trapped in the legal system. Meek, myself and our team at the REFORM Alliance are working feverishly to address these issues in a meaningful way and with transformative legislation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mill \u2013 real name Robert Rihmeek Williams \u2013 was arrested in 2007 at age 19 by police officer Reginald Graham, who subsequently resigned after the Philadelphia Police Department Board of Inquiry&nbsp;found him guilty of theft and lying.
