The supergroup was also backed by a band that included Jason Isbell and the Hanseroth Twins during the hourlong set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is our first show y\u2019all, and we\u2019re fucking terrified,\u201d Carlile told the crowd early on. But the band\u2019s debut show was rapturously received. The group traded off vocals in each other\u2019s songs, performing their forthcoming debut album in-order before reprising their lead single \u201cRedesigning Women\u201d for a bonus encore performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Shires sang a song for her father (\u201cCocktail and a Song\u201d), Carlile paid tribute to the passing generation of Highwaymen like Kris Kristofferson (\u201cHeaven is a Honky Tonk\u201d), Natalie Hemby offered up an ode to \u201call the suburban moms\u201d (\u201cMy Only Child\u201d) and Maren Morris channelled 70\u2019s Dolly Parton country stomp (\u201cLoose Change\u201d).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the apex of the Highwomen\u2019s set came halfway through when Carlile debuted a tears-in-your-beers piano ballad \u201cIf She Ever Leaves Me,\u201d which she described as the \u201cfirst gay country song.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s too much cologne,\u201d Carlile sang in the song, \u201cshe likes perfume.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JlvCcwynz2o?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Before the song, Isbell told the story of bringing the same-sex country love song that he co-write with Shires and Chris Tompkins to Carlile for the first time. \u201cIt was kind of like taking my civil rights movie to Spike Lee,\u201d he joked.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By the time the group finished their set with \u201cWheels of Laredo,\u201d the new Carlile original that also appears on Tanya Tucker\u2019s forthcoming album, it was clear that country music\u2019s newest supergroup\u2019s first time on stage had been a triumph. \u201cWe\u2019re the Highwomen,\u201d Carlile told the crowd as the foursome received a standing ovation, \u201cand we\u2019re pleased to meet ya.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-highwomen-live-newport-folk-festival-864319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe\u2019re the Highwomen, sing a story still untold,\u201d sang Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby at their first-ever performance as the Highwomen Friday evening at the Newport Folk Festival.
