Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme<\/a> made a surprise appearance at the Raconteurs<\/a>\u2019 Los Angeles performance Friday night, joining the band for an extended version of \u201cBlue Veins.\u201d Where the original track was only about four minutes on the Raconteurs\u2019 debut, Broken Boy Soldiers<\/em><\/a>, Homme and Jack White<\/a> led the group into a nine-minute blues jam.<\/p>\n

Fan-shot footage shows White digging deep into his lungs for the song\u2019s huffy verses about \u201cthe blood running through your blue veins,\u201d as Homme, dressed in black, lurks behind him. The two guitarists huddled together for the solo, practically making their instruments kiss, as they traded pentatonic licks. Meanwhile, Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark held down the keyboards.<\/p>\n

The footage is notable since Jack White bans the use of cell phones at his shows, requesting that fans zip them away in Yondr cases. Whoever captured the footage at the Raconteurs\u2019 Greek Theater show likely tore open the sock-like case to access their phone.<\/p>\n

White talked about how he loathed cell phones last year in an interview with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich for the latter\u2019s Apple Music show It\u2019s Electric<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI really react to the crowd, just like a stand-up comedian would,\u201d White told Ulrich. \u201cIf I finish a song and go, \u2018Ta-da!\u2019, and it\u2019s crickets, I\u2019m like, \u2018Well, I don\u2019t know what to do now.\u2019 Am I supposed to play a heavier song, a faster song? Do you want me to play acoustic? Do you want me to leave? I\u2019ll leave!\u2019 But what I don\u2019t like is, \u2018Is that how they really feel, or are they just not even paying attention because they\u2019re not engaged \u2026 because they\u2019re texting?\u2019 When you go to a movie theater, a symphony, church, whatever \u2013 there are all these moments in life where people put those away and engage.\u201d<\/p>\n
