Donald Glover<\/a>\u2019s musical alter ego Childish Gambino<\/a> channeled Garth Brooks<\/a>\u2019 own musical alter ego Chris Gaines for a cover of the 1999 song \u201cLost in You.\u201d He performed the song for Australian public radio station Triple J\u2019s \u201cLike a Version\u201d series.<\/p>\n

For his take on \u201cLost in You,\u201d Glover layered the tune with more soul and harmony with help from his backing band and singers. The musician managed to turn the campy moodiness of Gaines\u2019 original into earnest balladry, as if the song had been originated by any number of Nineties R&B heavyweights.<\/p>\n

Glover, who recently starred in Disney\u2019s remake of The Lion King<\/em><\/a> alongside Beyonc\u00e9, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner, is currently in Australia headlining the Splendor in the Grass festival. He will headline Lollapalooza<\/a> this weekend in Chicago.<\/p>\n

Garth Brooks embodied Chris Gaines, his fictional, troubled rock persona, for exactly one album cycle. Gaines released The Life of Chris Gaines<\/em> in 1999, starred in a faux Behind the Music<\/em> episode and even served as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live<\/em> (with Brooks appearing as the host). While the Gaines album received mixed reviews, \u201cLost in You\u201d is technically Brooks\u2019 only Top 40 single.<\/p>\n
