It will feature a remastered edition of the original album in stereo and mono, bonus tracks, demos, rehearsals, remixes, BBC performances and a lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/dave-davies\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dave-davies\" data-tag=\"dave-davies\">Dave Davies<\/a> solo LP from the era.<\/p>\n<p><em>Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)<\/em> is an ambitious concept album about a British carpet-layer, who moves to Australia after World War II. It was a followup to <em>The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society<\/em>, which also took the innovative step of telling a story across an entire album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started Arthur before the end of <em>Village Green<\/em>,\u201d Kinks frontman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ray-davies\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ray-davies\" data-tag=\"ray-davies\">Ray Davies<\/a> says in a statement. \u201cThe albums piggyback one another because they are joined. I\u2019d already written the song \u2018Arthur\u2019. I think I wrote \u2018Australia\u2019 when I was still living at 87 Fortis Green so it was quite early on. I remember taking it over to Dave, he lived in Cockfosters at the time, and playing it to him. We were laughing at the irony in the line, \u2018Nobody\u2019s got a chip on their shoulder\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave Davies began recording his first solo LP during the original sessions for <em>Arthur<\/em>, but he never finished it. \u201cOne of the reasons the album wasn\u2019t finished was because I felt The Kinks\u2019 management and record company were forcing me too much,\u201d Dave says in a statement. \u201cI felt very comfortable being in The Kinks and it seemed fulfilling to be part of a band. I didn\u2019t really want for more. I couldn\u2019t see the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XFexQfJRXrk?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Arthur<\/em> box set contains 12 complete tracks from the Dave Davies solo album along with ten alternate takes and mixes from the sessions. \u201cHearing Dave\u2019s songs again after all this time,\u201d Ray said in a statement, \u201cI found them quite moving because they were like the back story of what The Kinks were going through at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The box set will contain a 68-page book with essays about the Kinks, new interviews with the surviving members of the group, photos from the time period and the script for a proposed <em>Arthur<\/em> play that never got off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The process of assembling this Arthur box set forced Ray and Dave to spend time together in the studio. Along the way, they began the tentative step of recording new songs and finishing off old ones. It might lead to their first LP since dissolving in 1996 and possibly a tour, but right now they are taking things very slowly. \u201cInteresting question,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ray-dave-davies-new-kinks-songs-for-possible-album-859754\/\">Dave told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> earlier this month<\/a> when we asked about a possible Kinks tour. \u201cI really don\u2019t know. I think its possible. It\u2019s not out of the question. But at this stage, it\u2019s far too early to say.
