Jenny Hval<\/a> tells the psychedelic tale of Alice in Wonderland<\/em> on her new song \u201cHigh Alice.\u201d The track is the second single<\/a> off the Norwegian avant-pop artist\u2019s upcoming LP The Practice of Love<\/em>, out September 13th via Sacred Bones Records.<\/p>\n

The song opens with an intro of clashing, reverberating synths reminiscent of Radiohead\u2019s \u201c15 Step,\u201d but as Hval sings the opening lines, she makes it all her own. \u201cAlice lost\/She took a long rest\/In an unknown place,\u201d she whispers. \u201cShe thought \u2018where do all these creatures come from?\u2019 And \u2018why are they here?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a while, this song felt like my entire album,\u201d Hval said in a statement. \u201cI had no idea what the rest of it would be, just a feeling like this song and the title, the two words \u2018High Alice,\u2019 would get me there. My guiding stars at the time were Clarice Lispector\u2019s The Hour of the Star<\/em> and Kylie Minogue\u2019s \u201cConfide In Me.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe High Alice is the narrator of this album,\u201d Hval continued. \u201cI don\u2019t know how I wrote it, it was automatic. But I found it really funny that I mentioned the sea three times. High Alice goes to all the places I have taught myself to avoid, like the four Big Themes: Love, death, life, the ocean. The ocean. The ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Practice of Love<\/em> is available for pre-order.<\/a> A \u201cSacred Bones Secret Society\u201d limited edition version comes in white and black-streaked vinyl and is limited to just 150 copies. All vinyl copies come with a pack of tarot cards \u2014 one for each of the album\u2019s eight tracks.<\/p>\n
