For an artist that wrapped up a farewell tour<\/a> less than a year ago, Paul Simon<\/a> has been quite active on the concert circuit over the past couple of weeks. He not only played a surprise \u201cpop-up\u201d show at Oakland, California\u2019s Fox Theater on August 9th prior to his headlining set at Outside Lands two nights later. Then on August 13th and 14th, he headed over to Hawaii for two gigs at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. The second show featured a duet with Michael McDonald<\/a> on the Simon & Garfunkel classic \u201cCecilia.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about eight hours of live Paul Simon music in a five-day period. That might seem like he\u2019s pulling a Kiss or Ozzy Osbourne by shamelessly continuing to tour directly after a farewell tour, but these were all charity gigs for various environmental organizations. He didn\u2019t earn a dime from any of them, even the headlining set at Outside Lands; before he announced the Homeward Bound farewell tour of 2018, he said that he\u2019d continue to play the occasional charity show.<\/p>\n

The four shows Simon has played this month were quite similar to his Homeward Bound 2018 gigs, mixing classic hits like \u201cYou Can Call Me Al\u201d and \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water\u201d with deep cuts like \u201cSpirit Voices,\u201d \u201cThe Cool, Cool River\u201d and \u201cDazzling Blue.\u201d He was joined by Bob Weir for \u201cThe Boxer\u201d at Outside Lands, marking the first time they\u2019d ever played together even though they\u2019d been friends since 1967. In Hawaii, the slack-key guitar great Keola Beamer joined him on his own compositions \u201cSeabreeze\u201d and \u201cHonolulu City Lights.\u201d<\/p>\n
