{"id":2447684,"date":"2019-08-18T12:29:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-18T18:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=873112"},"modified":"2019-08-18T12:29:50","modified_gmt":"2019-08-18T18:29:50","slug":"duane-allmans-layla-guitar-sells-for-1-million-at-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/duane-allmans-layla-guitar-sells-for-1-million-at-auction\/","title":{"rendered":"Duane Allman\u2019s \u2018Layla\u2019 Guitar Sells for $1 Million at Auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The guitar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/duane-allman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_duane-allman\" data-tag=\"duane-allman\">Duane Allman<\/a> played on Derek and the Dominoes\u2019 classic \u201cLayla\u201d recently sold at auction for $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Allman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/100-greatest-guitarists-153675\/duane-allman-159154\/\">Number Nine on <em>Rolling Ston<\/em>e\u2019s 100 Greatest Guitarists list<\/a>, also played the 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop \u2013 which had been on display at the Allman Brothers\u2019 Big House museum in Macon, Georgia \u2013 on the Allman Brothers\u2019 1969 self-titled debut LP and 1970\u2019s <em>Idlewild South<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macon.com\/news\/local\/article233945637.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Macon Telegraph<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-873115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/27848a_lg.jpg?w=131\" alt width=\"131\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLayla\u201d was actually one of the final recordings that featured Allman playing that guitar: Soon after, the guitarist swapped it for a 1959 Les Paul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuane, fresh off recording \u2018Layla\u2019 was, as usual, playing his \u201957 Goldtop,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gottahaverockandroll.com\/Duane_Allman_s_Owned_and_Extensively_Played_1957_G-LOT27848.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll said<\/a>. \u201cThe opening band was a local group called the Stone Balloon, whose guitarist, Rick Stine, was playing a 1959 cherry sunburst Les Paul, which Duane was fond of. While making \u2018Layla\u2019 he had fallen in love with Clapton\u2019s cherry sunburst. Wanting one of his own, Duane offered to swap Les Pauls with Rick. When Rick hesitated, Allman upped the stakes, throwing in $200 and one of his regular Marshall 50 heads. Rick agreed and the deal was finalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following Allman\u2019s death in October 1971, the now-former owner purchased the guitar in rough condition in 1977 and repaired and restored it over the ensuing decades.<\/p>\n<p>According to the auction house, musicians that visited Georgia often tested out the guitar, including Metallica\u2019s Kirk Hammett and ZZ Top\u2019s Billy Gibbons; the Rolling Stones\u2019 plan to borrow the guitar for a July 27th Georgia gig was nixed due to the auction, Gotta Have Rock and Roll said.<\/p>\n<p>The anonymous, out-of-town buyer has pledged to keep it in the Big House collection for a few months a year. \u201cIt will be coming back to the Big House in late November,\u201d Big House museum director Richard Brent told the <em>Macon Telegraph<\/em>. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t ask for more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uSquiIVLhrQ?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/duane-allman-layla-guitar-auction-873112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The guitar Duane Allman played on Derek and the Dominoes\u2019 classic \u201cLayla\u201d recently sold at auction for $1 million.
