The play, tentatively slated to arrive in 2021 to honor the TV series\u2019 50th anniversary, will trace the personal story of <em>Soul Train<\/em> host and creator Don Cornelius, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2019\/08\/soul-train-musical-broadway-2021-questlove-producer-1202671126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a> reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Playwright Dominique Morisseau, director Kamilah Forbes and choreographer Camille A. Brown will all participate in the project. Questlove will executive produce alongside Cornelius\u2019 son Tony, <em>CSI<\/em> creator Anthony E. Zuiker (in his Broadway debut) and Live Nation Urban president Shawn Gee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2019\/08\/soul-train-musical-broadway-2021-questlove-producer-1202671126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a>, Tony Cornelius said the musical will honor the \u201caccomplishments, creative vision and legacy\u201d of his father, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/soul-train-creator-don-cornelius-dead-of-apparent-suicide-181979\/\">died in 2012<\/a> at age 75. He added, \u201cA Broadway musical only emphasizes the impact <em>Soul Train<\/em> has had on our American fabric.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cornelius also noted the wide influence of <em>Soul Train<\/em>, which featured dancing and live musical spots from influential African-American musicians in genres like disco, R&amp;B, jazz, funk, gospel and hip-hop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith many years of experience working directly with my father, I\u2019m forever grateful and deeply humbled by the impact&nbsp;<em>Soul Train<\/em>&nbsp;has had on the culture at large both here and abroad,\u201d he said. \u201cFor 37 years, and with purpose, through music, dance and style,&nbsp;<em>Soul Train<\/em>&nbsp;brought Love, Peace &amp; Soul to a national audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">BET recently picked up <em>American Soul<\/em>, a TV drama series based on the <em>Soul Train<\/em> story, for a second season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/questlove-soul-train-broadway-musical-873770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: Rolling Stone<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Questlove will co-executive produce an upcoming Broadway musical based on Soul Train, the iconic music variety program that aired from 1971 to 2006.
