{"id":2447747,"date":"2019-08-19T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T04:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-skiing-co-to-adjust-for-ikon-crowds-in-19-20-season\/"},"modified":"2019-08-20T08:22:03","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T14:22:03","slug":"aspen-skiing-co-to-adjust-for-ikon-crowds-in-19-20-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspen-skiing-co-to-adjust-for-ikon-crowds-in-19-20-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen Skiing Co. to adjust for Ikon crowds in \u201919-20 season"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/bizcover-atd-052719.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/bizcover-atd-052719.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/05\/bizcover-atd-052719-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>An expanded Snowmass Village this winter, as well as lots of snow, translated to more visits for the ski town.<\/strong><br \/><em>Jeremy Swanson\/Special to The Aspen Times<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">With the popularity of the Ikon Pass that was launched last year, Aspen Skiing Co. will make adjustments to deal with the masses this upcoming season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In an annual update to Aspen City Council on Monday, Mike Kaplan, Skico\u2019s president and CEO, spoke about specifics of last season\u2019s surge of Ikon Pass holders at Aspen-Snowmass resorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Most of those visitors came on the weekends, choking parking and traffic at Aspen Highlands, as well as lift lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Kaplan said Skico heard loud and clear from locals about the <a id=\"N0x2384910N0x22a3dc0:N0x2384910N0x210a658\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/skico-says-season-ski-pass-users-are-out-in-force-because-of-snow-conditions\/\">surge of out-of-towners<\/a>, noting the stickers that were plastered around town that said, \u201cStop Ikonizing Aspen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThere was no secret there was some nasty labeling going on,\u201d he said. \u201cThe irony of this criticism, \u2026 I was taken aback by it\u201d because Skico gets criticized for catering to the rich and famous, and the Ikon pass was a way to get the average Joe skiing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cAfter I got over that reaction we tried to get to the bottom of it and first and foremost, it\u2019s change, right? I get it,\u201d Kaplan said of the local thinking he or she can park at Aspen Highlands on a Saturday without the lot getting full before 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cBut I urge all of us, and I ask for your help, to maintain perspective and remember that it is critical to diversify our customer base. But we are not going to sit back and assume this is OK. We are committed to making sure it is a quality experience for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He said Skico plans to hang more chairs on chairlifts that have capacity at Highlands and Snowmass to help move the lines quicker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThere is a ton we can do,\u201d Kaplan said of dealing with the crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">More buses will run from the Brush Creek Park and Ride lot, and Skico will look into message signs on Maroon Creek Road to alert motorists if the Aspen Highlands parking garage is full before traffic backs up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skico may also use social media platforms such as Twitter for real-time traffic information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThat was a bad scene,\u201d Councilwoman Ann Mullins said of the traffic lined up from Highlands to the roundabout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Kaplan noted that skier visits were up 20% last season over the previous one, with the main driver being a banner snow year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><a id=\"N0x2384910N0x22a3e20:N0x2384910N0x210ac40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-skiing-co-announces-chamber-premier-pass-will-increase-to-1479-include-ikon-base-pass\/\">Local passholders<\/a> were about 45% of that increase, and 40% of the skier visits over the weekends were Ikon Pass holders, with most of them hailing from the Front Range and California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Kaplan also said 70% of the Ikon pass holders were new to Aspen-Snowmass, and the largest demographic was between 25 and 34 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThey look and act like a local,\u201d he said, adding they are younger and more accomplished skiers, which is why they flock to Highlands for steeper terrain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Ikon Pass is an effective tool to help Skico address the sport\u2019s aging demographic and gain new a customer base, Kaplan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Joining Kaplan in the annual presentation was Auden Schendler, Skico\u2019s vice president of sustainability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He told council about the company\u2019s housing project being developed in <a id=\"N0x2384910N0x22a3f40:N0x2384910N0x210afa0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/basalt-council-votes-4-2-to-approve-aspen-skiing-co-affordable-housing-at-willits\/\">Willits in Basalt<\/a>, which will further sustainability goals just with sheer manpower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cHousing is an environmental issue,\u201d he said, adding that any environmental endeavor requires human beings to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Skico will build on its \u201cGive a Flake\u201d environmental campaign this year, which will focus on the upcoming elections and mobilizing the messaging of action around climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe want to focus primarily on issues,\u201d Schendler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspen-skiing-co-to-adjust-for-ikon-crowds-in-19-20-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An expanded Snowmass Village this winter, as well as lots of snow, translated to more visits for the ski town.Jeremy Swanson\/Special to The Aspen Times With the popularity of the Ikon Pass that was launched last year, Aspen Skiing Co. will make adjustments to deal with the masses this upcoming season.
