First Aid Kit<\/a> paid tribute to the late David Berman<\/a> with a gut-wrenching cover of Silver Jews<\/a>\u2019 \u201cRandom Rules.\u201d<\/a> The Swedish folk duo also released an original song \u201cStrange Beauty\u201d in honor of Berman, who died by suicide at the age of 52 earlier this month.<\/a><\/p>\n

Singer Klara S\u00f6derberg takes the lead on \u201cRandom Rules,\u201d gently laying her vocals down over aching guitar. \u201cSo if you don\u2019t want me I promise not to linger\/But before I go I gotta ask you dear about the tan line on your ring finger.\u201d Her sister Johanna harmonizes with her on the chorus, giving the track a somber feel. The sisters further pay tribute to the indie singer-songwriter with \u201cStrange Beauty,\u201d which they wrote while processing their grief. \u201cDavid died yesterday,\u201d Klara sings. \u201cToday it\u2019s raining\/I know I didn\u2019t know you\/But in my heart I know\u2005it\u2005to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think a lot of people were as shocked as I was upon hearing the news of David Berman\u2019s passing,\u201d Klara said in a statement. \u201cIt didn\u2019t seem real. It left me completely devastated. So I wrote the song \u2018Strange Beauty\u2019 to try to make sense of my feelings. \u2018Random Rules\u2019 is a long time Berman favorite of ours and a song we always thought we would record if we ever made a cover album. It holds some of the greatest lyrics ever penned and shows the genius of David Berman. We hope the songs can be some kind of comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly before his death, Berman and his new band Purple Mountains released their self-titled debut<\/a> \u2014 his first new music in eleven years. \u201cI found it difficult this year to gear myself up to listen to the Purple Mountains record because I didn\u2019t know if I was ready to re-engage with him emotionally,\u201d Rob Sheffield wrote in his tribute to Berman<\/a>. \u201cIt was weird this year to start thinking of him in the present and even the future. Now it\u2019s weird to think of him as heading back into the past already. It\u2019s too late, and it\u2019s too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
