Patty Griffin<\/a> turns Tom Waits<\/a>\u2019 elegiac, cinematic \u201cRuby\u2019s Arms\u201d into a sparse, somehow even more heartbreaking piano ballad for a new compilation, Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits<\/em>. She adds a minute to the runtime of the original song, which appeared on Waits\u2019 1980 album Heartattack and Vine<\/em>, and allows her voice to ache all over the lyrics in a way that shows a new depth to the lyrics, contrasting Waits\u2019 gruff original.<\/p>\n

The tribute album, due out November 22nd, features covers of Waits\u2019 song performed by women, including Aimee Mann, Rosanne Cash, Phoebe Bridgers, Iris Dement, and many others. Another standout that the label has released early is Courtney Marie Andrews\u2019 take on the brooding Rain Dogs<\/em> single \u201cDowntown Train.\u201d In the hands of the folk and country singer, it\u2019s a little lighter and twangier, and the arrangement shows off the lyrics a little more.
