Taylor Swift<\/a> has expressed her political viewpoints and disillusionment with the U.S. government in an upcoming interview. The full article will run in the Saturday issue of the Guardian<\/em>, but on Friday the newspaper posted selected snippets<\/a> where the 29-year-old pop star was unusually candid about her thoughts towards the Trump presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a democracy \u2013 at least, we\u2019re supposed to be \u2013 where you\u2019re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate. I really think that he thinks this is an autocracy,\u201d Swift said of Trump.<\/p>\n

The Guardian<\/em> stated that Swift \u201cbegan feeling conflicted about what the U.S. stood for when \u2018all the dirtiest tricks in the book were used and it worked,’\u201d possibly referring to the 2016 election, and that she described the current political climate in the country as \u201cgaslighting the American public into being like, \u2018If you hate the president, you hate America.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift faced criticism during the 2016 election by not publicly endorsing a candidate, leading to wide speculation on her political views and to her inadvertent (and brief) adoption as a figurehead<\/a> by certain circles of the \u201calt-right.\u201d In the interview, Swift cited her mother\u2019s cancer relapse and her public feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian as reasons for not wanting to step into the political spotlight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just trying to protect my mental health \u2013 not read the news very much, go cast my vote, tell people to vote,\u201d she said. \u201cI just knew what I could handle and I knew what I couldn\u2019t. I was literally about to break.\u201d She also confirmed that she would have endorsed Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Swift stated her views on abortion \u2013 \u201cObviously, I\u2019m pro-choice\u201d \u2013 and expressed dismay over Tennessee lawmakers voting to impose a near-total ban on abortion in the state. In June, Swift penned an open letter<\/a> to Republican Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander urging him to support the Equality Act, which would help protect LGBTQ people from discrimination. In the Guardian<\/em> interview, she vowed to \u201cdo everything I can for 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swift\u2019s seventh album, Lover<\/em>, arrives today. It includes her pro-LGBTQ anthem \u201cYou Need to Calm Down\u201d and other songs (\u201cMiss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince,\u201d \u201cDeath by a Thousand Cuts\u201d) that allude to Trump\u2019s America.<\/p>\n
