As the actor explained, the name came after a team of scientists at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory noticed that a small rock, just a bit larger than a golf ball, had been propelled about three feet by the thrusters of the Mars InSight lander as it touched down last November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAnd some scientists,\u201d Downey Jr. quipped, \u201cin a fit of fandom <em>and<\/em> clever association, they put forth, \u2018Why don\u2019t we name it, Rolling Stones Rock?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NASA also shared a visual recreation of the rock\u2019s historic tumble, which, per a press release, is \u201cthe farthest NASA has seen a rock roll while landing a spacecraft on another planet.\u201d The clip is fittingly set to \u201cIt\u2019s Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It)\u201d and ends with an actual photo of \u201cRolling Stones Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1Az-S4MdifU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, the Rolling Stones said of the honor, \u201cWhat a wonderful way to celebrate the \u2018Stones No Filter\u2019 tour arriving in Pasadena. This is definitely a milestone in our long and eventful history. A huge thank you to everyone at NASA for making it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As longtime JPL geologist Matt Golombek noted, \u201cRolling Stones Rock\u201d probably \u201cwon\u2019t be in a lot of scientific papers,\u201d but it will serve an important function as NASA studies the landscape of Mars.
