{"id":2447916,"date":"2019-08-23T09:20:59","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T15:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=875637"},"modified":"2019-08-23T09:20:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T15:20:59","slug":"gallants-sleep-on-it-revives-nineties-slow-jams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/gallants-sleep-on-it-revives-nineties-slow-jams\/","title":{"rendered":"Gallant\u2019s \u2018Sleep on It\u2019 Revives Nineties Slow Jams"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/gallant.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Gallant has always been an acrobatic vocalist searching for the right songs. \u201cSleep on It\u201d finds nourishment in the great R&amp;B ballads of the late 1990s and early 2000s: a sprinkle of Jagged Edge\u2019s \u201cTrue Man,\u201d a pinch of Avant\u2019s \u201cSeparated,\u201d essence of Marques Houston\u2019s \u201cGrass Is Greener.\u201d When these songs were being cut, an acoustic guitar and an 808 were the key to emotional fireworks \u2014 and frequently, a radio hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSleep on It\u201d opens in the middle of a lovers\u2019 quarrel, as Gallant attempts to navigate a minefield of \u201cfussin,&#8217;\u201d \u201cfightin&#8217;\u201d and \u201cborderline cryin.&#8217;\u201d He decides to call a truce: \u201cGirl I know you\u2019re tired of this argument\/Why don\u2019t we sleep on it?\u201d And then he suddenly changes his tactics: \u201cComplicated, but your body\u2019s just the opposite\/I want to sleep on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallant delivers the come-on entirely straight-faced, in the exact same pleading tone he used to ask for a cease-fire. The element of surprise helps him pull it off, as does a bridge that distantly echoes Usher\u2019s indelible \u201cNice and Slow.\u201d The singer brings things to a close by firing a series of falsetto salvos just before the final hook.<\/p>\n<p>Gallant has not released an album since 2016. <em>Ology<\/em> was full of reckless falsetto \u2014 enough to earn a Grammy nomination \u2014 but hindered by timid production. Last year Gallant returned with the sweeping \u201cDoesn\u2019t Matter,\u201d which represented a personal breakthrough but not a commercial one.
