Newman sings, before Neko Case helps him complete the line in perfect harmony, \u201cDidn\u2019t need a war, but we got one, see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, Newman said the first version of \u201cThe Surprise Knock\u201d had a very different feel than the final cut, but he was inspired rework the track so it sounded like a New Pornographers song from 2005. \u201cI thought enough time has passed that I feel like I can play songs that sort of sound like a classic a sound and not feel like I\u2019m repeating myself, because it\u2019s been so long,\u201d Newman said. \u201cThat was definitely a part of it: Just wanting to\u2026 I hate to say \u2018get back,\u2019 but just get more slightly raucous and sounding more like a band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Surprise Knock\u201d follows previously released album cut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-new-pornographers-falling-down-the-stairs-of-your-smile-866611\/\">\u201cFalling Down the Stairs of Your Smile,\u201d<\/a> which arrived earlier this month. <em>In the Morse Code of Brake Lights<\/em> marks the band\u2019s first LP since 2017\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/50-best-albums-of-2017-123296\/the-new-pornographers-whiteout-conditions-125246\/\"><em>Whiteout Conditions<\/em><\/a>.
