Lil Nas X<\/a> put a futuristic spin on his country-rap breakout hit \u201cOld Town Road\u201d and his follow-up 7<\/em> single \u201cPanini\u201d at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

The performance opened with a cheeky bit that imagined a future where Lil Nas X was not only President of the United States of America, but releasing the 3,162nd remix of \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d featuring artists like Young Sandwich, the Ghost of Benjamin Franklin and Old Thug. After a snippet of \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d the rapper launched into \u201cPanini,\u201d embracing a Tron<\/em>-like aesthetic as he lip synced to the tune and moved through some intricate choreography with a cadre of back-up dancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cOld Town Road\u201d has spent the spring and summer dominating the charts, achieving over 1 billion streams and is currently Number Eight on the Rolling Stone<\/em> Top 100. \u201cPanini\u201d hasn\u2019t achieved that level of success, but did introduce Nas to Nirvana, who admitted he had never listened to Nevermind<\/em> before interpolating his song with \u201cIn Bloom.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the first song I genuinely formulated,\u201d Nas said of \u201cOld Town Road\u201d to Rolling Stone.<\/em><\/a> \u201cI was like, \u2018I gotta make it short, I gotta make it catchy, I gotta have quotable lines that people want to use as captions.\u2019 Especially with the \u2018horses in the back\u2019 line, I was like, \u2018This is something people are gonna say every day.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The rapper is scheduled to perform at New York\u2019s Rooftop at Pier 17 on Thursday. On October 17th, he\u2019ll perform at the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Canada with fellow cowboy Billy Ray Cyrus.<\/p>\n
