The Pretenders\u2019 Chrissie Hynde<\/a> mingles jazz grooves and psychedelic experimentation on her new cover of the Kinks<\/a>\u2019 1967 song \u201cNo Return.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The track opens with a wash of static, building to a Bossa nova drum pattern and atmospheric piano. \u201cIf I could see\/ Just how lonely my life would be\/ If you passed me by and said farewell\/ And there is no return,\u201d Hynde gently croons. \u201cStars would shine no more\/ I would walk up and down this lonely room\/ I would have friends, but be alone\/ For there is no return.\u201d The piece grows stranger as it progresses, slowly crescendoing into a spiral of keyboards, strings, woodwinds and processed vocal loops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hynde previously recorded two songs written by the Kinks\u2019 Ray Davies<\/a>: The Pretenders covered the band\u2019s 1964 cut \u201cStop Your Sobbing\u201d for their self-titled debut record in 1980, and they tackled \u201cI Go to Sleep\u201d \u2014 a Davies-penned single released by the Applejacks in 1965 \u2014 for 1981\u2019s Pretenders II<\/em>. (Davies is the father of Hynde\u2019s oldest daughter, Natalie.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite her obvious love of the Kinks\u2019 music, Hynde told Billboard<\/em><\/a> she \u201cwasn\u2019t really familiar with\u201d \u201cNo Return\u201d before producer Marius de Vries selected the song to include on her upcoming covers album, Valve Bone Woe<\/em><\/a>. She also admitted \u201cit never occurred to [her]\u201d to run the song by Davies. \u201cThe album\u2019s not out, so I guess he hasn\u2019t heard it, but I have no idea,\u201d she said. \u201cI can only imagine any songwriter\u2019s happy when someone covers their song \u2014 why shouldn\u2019t they be? Even if it\u2019s bad, they\u2019re still covering your song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The jazz-flavored, 14-track Valve Bone Woe<\/em> features Hynde\u2019s interpretations of songs by Charles Mingus<\/a>, the Beach Boys<\/a>, Nick Drake, John Coltrane, Frank Sinatra and Rodgers and Hammerstein, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n
