Iggy Pop<\/a> has shared his synth-laden new single \u201cSonali\u201d from his upcoming album<\/a> Free<\/em>, due out September 6th. \u201cAre you tuning in to our listening party?,\u201d Pop asked<\/a> on Facebook Thursday.<\/p>\n

Like Free\u2019s previous singles \u201cJames Bond<\/a>\u201d and the title track<\/a>, the Stooges frontman croons over a backing that\u2019s more jazz ensemble than garage rock, with trumpeter and \u201cSonali\u201d co-writer Leron Thomas contributing another standout solo to the track.<\/p>\n

\u201cStack on the clay, pile up the rocks, high off the ground, chisel it down,\u201d bellows Pop. \u201cTo park the car\/We must find parking\/Or spend the day, on the freeway\/Stay in your lane.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a previous statement, Iggy Pop described Free<\/em> as \u201can album in which other artists speak for me, but I lend my voice, adding that after the extensive touring in support of the Josh Homme-assisted Post Pop Depression<\/em> \u2013 which helped \u201crid myself of the problem of chronic insecurity that had dogged my life and career for too long\u201d \u2013 also left him exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like I wanted to put on shades, turn my back, and walk away,\u201d Pop continued. \u201cI wanted to be free. I know that\u2019s an illusion, and that freedom is only something you feel, but I have lived my life thus far in the belief that that feeling is all that is worth pursuing; all that you need \u2014 not happiness or love necessarily, but the feeling of being free.\u201d<\/p>\n
