Animal Collective<\/a> members Avey Tare and Geologist pay tribute to late Purple Mountains singer David Berman<\/a> with a cover of Silver Jews<\/a>\u2019 \u201cBallad of Reverend War Character.\u201d Proceeds from the downloads of their rendition via Bandcamp<\/a> will be donated to MusiCares and Music Health Alliance.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few weeks ago we planned on seeing Purple Mountains together,\u201d the band members said in a statement; Berman died by suicide<\/a> on the eve of his first tour in years. \u201cInstead we spent the night listening to David\u2019s records and talking about how much his music and art meant to us. He was an inspiration for decades. One we wouldn\u2019t be here without.\u201d<\/p>\n

Avey Tare and Geologist continued, \u201cWe\u2019ve been playing covers of his music since 1994 when we first picked up guitars together, so it felt like one of the few things we could do to get through the sadness. The next day we worked on this cover of \u2018Ballad of Reverend War Character.’\u201d The song originally appeared on Silver Jews\u2019 1996 album The Natural Bridge<\/em>.<\/p>\n
