{"id":2448230,"date":"2019-09-01T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=312146"},"modified":"2019-09-02T08:37:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T14:37:31","slug":"mac-and-cheese-festival-in-aspen-fails-to-return-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/mac-and-cheese-festival-in-aspen-fails-to-return-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Mac and cheese festival in Aspen fails to return this fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/EDLmacfestival-atd-091017-9.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/EDLmacfestival-atd-091017-9.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/EDLmacfestival-atd-091017-9-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>Thea Rioux gets handed mac and cheese from the Cache Cache booth for the seventh annual Mac and Cheese Festival held on Aspen&#8217;s Restaurant Row in September 2017.<\/strong><br \/><em>Anna Stonehouse\/The Aspen Times<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">For the second year in a row, the city of Aspen has failed to resurrect the mac and cheese festival, which was a favorite among <a id=\"N0x1f11f30N0x20a11c0:N0x1f11f30N0x20fb308\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/notes-from-underfed-the-mac-cheese-files\/\">locals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The last time the free event was held was in 2017, when former city of Aspen recreation supervisor Keith Bulicz organized it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Bulicz founded the festival in 2011, which attracted <a id=\"N0x1f11f30N0x20a12e0:N0x1f11f30N0x20fb4b8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/photos-aspen-mac-and-cheese-festival\/\">thousands of people<\/a> to a block on Hopkins Avenue, known as \u201cRestaurant Row.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">It had a dozen or more restaurants competing for the title of the best mac and cheese, and was typically held the second weekend of September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><a id=\"N0x1f11f30N0x20a1340:N0x1f11f30N0x20fb620\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/trending\/aspen-mac-cheese-wont-be-held-this-year\/\">Last year<\/a>, Susan Arenella, who works in the city\u2019s recreation department, said organizers decided to take a yearlong hiatus to rethink the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">But the event fell off the radar and has now been kicked over to Nancy Lesley, who is the city\u2019s special events department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bigger conversation and I need to pick up the ball,\u201d Lesley said. \u201cWe are committed to looking at this. \u2026 Hopefully it\u2019s a \u2018when\u2019 not an \u2018if\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Arenella said last year that organizers were thinking about making the event more of a festival in a park with other activities, and possibly change the timing because September is a busy month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Lesley said she plans to reach out to the restaurants that have participated in the past to see what their feelings are about changing the event and the time of year it\u2019s held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWhen the event started it was a slower season,\u201d Lesley said. \u201cWe need to look at the timing and location of the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Chris Lanter, co-owner of Home Team BBQ and Cache Cache, two restaurants that picked up most of the awards at the festival in 2017, said he loved to be part of the event even though it cost a couple thousand bucks to participate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe did it because it was fun,\u201d he said. \u201cI loved that you could just come out and eat mac and cheese for free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Lanter had enlisted students from the ProStart culinary program at Aspen High School to help him and his staff.
