The tune is part of their in-progress LP that Townshend told the audience will come out in November. It\u2019s their first collection of new songs since 2006\u2019s <em>Endless Wire<\/em> and just their second since 1982\u2019s <em>It\u2019s Hard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig Cigars\u201d was first released as \u201cGuantanamo\u201d on Pete Townshend\u2019s 2015 compilation album <em>Truancy: The Very Best of Pete Townshend.<\/em> The politically charged song is about the prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. \u201cDown in Guantanamo\/We still got the ball and chain,\u201d Daltrey sang. \u201cThat pretty piece of Cuba\/Resolved to cause men pain\/When you light up in Cuba You won\u2019t feel the same again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Who first played it at London\u2019s Wembley Stadium on July 6th along with \u201cHero Ground Zero,\u201d a previously unknown song also slated for the Who\u2019s new record. Townshend wrote most of the new songs specifically for Daltrey\u2019s voice, but initially got very mixed feedback when he shared them with him. \u201cJust silence from Roger,\u201d Townshend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-who-plot-symphonic-u-s-arena-tour-new-studio-album-for-2019-777375\/\">told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in January.<\/a> \u201cI had to bully him to respond and then it wasn\u2019t the response I wanted. He just blathered for a while and in the end I really stamped my foot and said, \u2018Roger, I don\u2019t care if you really like this stuff. You have to sing it. You\u2019ll like it in 10 years time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In time, though, Daltrey learned to love the material. \u201cThey\u2019re all great songs,\u201d he said. \u201c But sometimes I hear them and I think, \u2018I can\u2019t add anything to this to make my job as singer worthy of doing anything better than what Pete has already done.\u2019 There\u2019s at least five or six I can lay into and I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll come out incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, the Who are focused on this new leg of their <em>Moving On!<\/em> tour that will keep them on the road in North America through October 24th. Sunday\u2019s MSG show was rocky at times with Daltrey struggling to hear himself throughout the night and Townshend dealing with a throat issue that eventually caused him to ask a crew member for a throat lozenge that he sucked on while performing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI seriously wish we were sharper tonight,\u201d Townshend told the audience. \u201cI know we\u2019re not on top form. But you know, you have given us so much love.
