Christie\u2019s will auction off a trumpet both designed and played by Miles Davis<\/a> next month. Commissioned by Davis in 1980, the Martin Company horn features a distinctive gilt pattern showing crescent moons and stars, with the word \u201cMiles\u201d inscribed inside the bell. Christie\u2019s estimates the instrument\u2019s value at between $70,000 and $100,000.<\/p>\n

The trumpet is one of three commissioned by Davis around the time he reemerged from a five-year performing and recording hiatus. The horn up for auction features a deep-blue lacquer finish; a red one with the same celestial pattern remains in Davis\u2019 family\u2019s possession, while a black one is buried with Davis in the Bronx\u2019s Woodlawn Cemetery. The model is a Martin Committee \u2014 named because it was designed by a team of five \u2014 which was favored by top jazz<\/a> trumpeters from the Forties through the Sixties, and used by Davis throughout his career. The present owner of the blue \u201cMoon and Stars\u201d trumpet acquired it from jazz guitarist and sometime Davis collaborator George Benson.<\/p>\n

\u201c[A] trumpet like this \u2014 top quality in its field, beautifully made and, most important, with impeccable provenance \u2014 is definitely top in class,\u201d Becky MacGuire of Christie\u2019s tells Rolling Stone<\/em> in a statement.<\/p>\n

A video released in conjunction with the auction announcement shows contemporary jazz luminary Keyon Harrold \u2014 who recorded the trumpet passages heard in Don Cheadle\u2019s 2016 Davis biopic Miles Ahead<\/em><\/a> \u2014 playing the horn. In the New York\u2013set clip, he discusses how \u201cthe fire of the music here\u201d brought him to New York from his home of Ferguson, Missouri, near Davis\u2019 birthplace of Alton, Illinois.<\/p>\n

\u201cMiles being one of the coolest of the cool, his energy on the scene really, really inspired greatness,\u201d Harrold says, accompanied by footage of him improvising on the \u201cMoon and Stars\u201d horn in an empty club.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a classic. This is a relic. As a trumpet player holding this horn, this is amazing,\u201d Harrold says of the instrument, while the camera pans over its features. \u201cKnowing the history of Miles as being very, very detail-oriented, I can imagine he designed this totally himself. He was a visual artist as well. The layout of this is so beautiful: the moon, the stars. Just looking at the design, it\u2019s just flawless.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Miles Davis \u201cMoon and Stars\u201d trumpet will feature in \u201cThe Exceptional Sale\u201d at Christie\u2019s in New York on October 29th.<\/p>\n
