Nicki Minaj<\/a> is walking away from the music game, according to Nicki Minaj. \u201cI\u2019ve decided to retire & have my family,\u201d Nicki wrote on Twitter. \u201cI know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me.\u201d The widespread implication from Barbz<\/a> and the majority of social media is that Minaj is forgoing the release of new music in favor of building a family.<\/p>\n

In a 2018 Wonderland<\/em><\/a> cover story, Minaj shared that motherhood was around the corner for her. \u201cI\u2019ve got to get married first then I\u2019ll have a child. I might be closer than people think actually,\u201d Nicki said. \u201cI love children. I\u2019m not going to put that off for much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The likelihood of Minaj permanently retiring from music, though, is dubious. Historically, a premature retirement announcement is a classic late stage career move for many hip-hop<\/a> artists. The most infamous case is Jay-Z<\/a> dedicating an entire album run to quitting music, only to re-emerge three years later with Kingdom Come<\/em>. 50 Cent famously claimed he would retire if his 2007 Curtis<\/em> album didn\u2019t outsell Kanye West\u2019s Graduation<\/em><\/a>. Since then, nearly every high-profile rapper of the last decade \u2014 Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert \u2014 has claimed they were getting out of music. Spoiler Alert<\/strong>: Every single one of those musicians has yet to retire.<\/p>\n

Considering that Nicki is experiencing a recent hit in Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s \u201cHot Girl Summer\u201d<\/a> and is quickly becoming the queen of podcast beef<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t seem like she will be gone \u2014 completely, at least \u2014 for long. Nevertheless, she does deserve a massive vacation.<\/p>\n
