Jared Polis.<\/p>\n<p>The groups leading the recall announced Friday morning they counted more than 300,000 signatures \u2014 a number that could not be independently verified. That\u2019s well short of the 631,266 signatures needed by the end of the day to put the question in front of voters.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the setback, leaders said they\u2019ll remain steadfast in opposing the Democratic governor they say is taking the state in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fell short,\u201d said Karen Kataline, spokeswoman for Dismiss Polis. \u201cYet we have made history, regardless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor welcomed Friday\u2019s announcement by his opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all that fuss, I was pleasantly surprised that they didn\u2019t turn in a single signature on the recall,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cI hope the remaining misguided efforts against others see the same results as Tom Sullivan\u2019s did before.
