Ondara made his U.S. television debut for <em>CBS This Morning<\/em>\u2018s Saturday Sessions, where the Kenyan-born singer-songwriter delivered three tracks off his recent album <em>Tales of America<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For the performance of \u201cLebanon,\u201d \u201cSaying Goodbye\u201d and \u201cTorch Song,\u201d Ondara \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/j-s-ondara-tales-of-america-interview-790867\/\">one of Rolling Stone\u2019s <em>Artists You Need to Know<\/em><\/a> \u2013was backed by Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg along with Dawes\u2019 Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith.<\/p>\n<p>Ondara\u2019s <em>Tales of America<\/em> arrived in February 2019; a deluxe reissue, dubbed <em>Tales of America: The Second Coming<\/em>, is out September 20th.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0xX1Mg8fcAU?version=3&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;autohide=2&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Ondara <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/j-s-ondara-tales-of-america-interview-790867\/\">spoke to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> about his journey from Nairobi to Minnesota, home state of his musical hero Bob Dylan and where Ondara landed after winning the Green Card lottery about six years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think about it, it\u2019s not very real,\u201d Ondara said. \u201cWhen I think about my childhood, and where I\u2019m from, the chances of this are so random that sometimes I lose words to try to explain what it\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a teenager in Kenya, Ondara committed Dylan\u2019s lyrics to memory. \u201cOne of the reasons I love Dylan so much is that he was this romantic dude: \u2018I\u2019m going to to go to New York because Woody Guthrie\u2019s over there,&#8217;\u201d Ondara added. \u201cI\u2019m a romantic in that same way. I just figured I\u2019ll go to America, this random city. I\u2019m going to follow where my heart wants me to go.
