{"id":2448513,"date":"2019-09-10T09:04:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T15:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/?p=882168"},"modified":"2019-09-10T09:04:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-10T15:04:07","slug":"rushs-a-farewell-to-kings-lp-chronicled-in-new-graphic-novel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/music-news\/rushs-a-farewell-to-kings-lp-chronicled-in-new-graphic-novel\/","title":{"rendered":"Rush\u2019s \u2018A Farewell to Kings\u2019 LP Chronicled in New Graphic Novel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/rushband.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fantoons, an L.A. studio known for creating rock-themed animation, has released a new full-length graphic novel that chronicles the making of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rush\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rush\" data-tag=\"rush\">Rush<\/a>\u2019s 1977 prog-rock classic, <em>A Farewell to Kings.<\/em> Spanning 144 pages, fully authorized by the band, and based on interviews with Rush guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/alex-lifeson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_alex-lifeson\" data-tag=\"alex-lifeson\">Alex Lifeson<\/a> and <em>Kings<\/em> producer Terry Brown, the richly illustrated comic offers a detailed account of the writing and recording of the LP that contained future Rush classics like \u201cCloser to the Heart\u201d and \u201cXanadu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2N8boLb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>The Making of \u2018A Farewell to Kings\u2019<\/em><\/a> tells the story of how the band followed up its 1976 breakthrough LP, <em>2112,<\/em> with another masterpiece of hard-hitting, epic-scale rock. The story follows the writing and recording of the album in two peaceful settings \u2014 a rural Ontario farmhouse, and Rockfield Studios in the Welsh countryside, respectively \u2014 jumping back and forth between that period and the present, as the members and Brown narrate the story. David Calcano and Lindsay Lee wrote the text for the book, while Juan Riera, Ittai Manero, and Lee contributed the stylized yet lifelike artwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved the material, and each time we caught a great take, whether it was drums, bass, guitar or a vocal, we got \u2018that buzz,&#8217;\u201d Brown writes of the <em>Kings<\/em> sessions in the book\u2019s foreword. The guys were so focused on delivering concise parts and performances that I knew we were making a very special album in <em>A Farewell to Kings.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n<p><em>The Making of \u2018A Farewell to Kings\u2019<\/em> continues Fantoons\u2019 ongoing partnership with Rush, a collaboration that has produced everything from a Rush coloring book to a puzzle featuring a cartoon image of bassist-vocalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/geddy-lee\/\" id=\"auto-tag_geddy-lee\" data-tag=\"geddy-lee\">Geddy Lee<\/a> dressed up as the Mona Lisa.
