While some deeply misplaced Outkast comparisons<\/a> and overly hyperbolic Rap Twitter praise may have soured some on Earthgang<\/a>, a Young Thug<\/a> feature \u2014 in this case on the duo\u2019s \u201cProud Of U\u201d \u2014 is always enough to make me relent.<\/p>\n

Thug is experiencing a long-awaited commercial boom thanks to the success of the recently released So Much Fun<\/em>. The album debuted at Number One on the RS<\/em> Album Charts<\/a> and the Billboard<\/em> 200, becoming the YSL rapper\u2019s highest-charting album to date. But for all its bangers, So Much Fun<\/em> is a project that tends to shave off Thug\u2019s wildest creative edges \u2014 the monstrous voices, insane ad-libs, and borderless rhyme schemes \u2014 in pursuit of streaming dominance. \u201cSo Much Fun<\/em> is like nothing to be thought about,\u201d he told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> in August. \u201cIt\u2019s only for fun purposes. The name of the album is directly what it means. There\u2019s no static to it. It\u2019s just so much fun. I don\u2019t even want you to think when you listen to this even if I\u2019m saying a metaphorical bars or anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

On \u201cProud Of U,\u201d a glimmer of Thug\u2019s more unpredictable side emerges. The honed delivery and sonic homogeneity of So Much Fun<\/em> is momentarily gone. Melodies crash against melodies. Flows are abandoned, re-found, deconstructed, and built back up again. Only about half of Thug\u2019s mush-mouthed delivery is comprehensible. The punchlines are both subtle (\u201cHelp you get your body fixed, conspiracy) and senseless (\u201cEven though my cake up, I got cadence and real nice teeth\u201d). In short, it\u2019s a microcosm of everything that made Thug one of the most exciting musicians of the decade.<\/p>\n
