{"id":2448584,"date":"2019-09-11T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T04:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/basalt-council-approves-first-reading-of-performing-arts-center-proposal\/"},"modified":"2019-09-11T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T04:40:00","slug":"basalt-council-approves-first-reading-of-performing-arts-center-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/basalt-council-approves-first-reading-of-performing-arts-center-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Basalt council approves first reading of performing arts center proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/artscenter-atd-09XX19.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/artscenter-atd-09XX19.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/09\/artscenter-atd-09XX19-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><figcaption><strong>A performing arts center at Willits would feature a concrete canopy suspended over the main entrance.<\/strong><br \/><em>TACAW\/courtesy image<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Basalt Town Council unanimously approved the first reading of the proposal for <a id=\"N0x1ca15d0N0x1ccc560:N0x1ca15d0N0x1cc1840\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/basalt-officials-say-proposed-performing-arts-center-will-make-its-stamp-at-willits\/\">a new performing arts center at Willits on Tuesday night.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">According to Jacque Whitsitt, town mayor, there wasn\u2019t much council discussion after the proposal presentation for the new arts facility, which will replace The Arts Campus at Willits nonprofit\u2019s temporary venue in Willits Town Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cEverybody is on board with the design and with how the center will help the town of Basalt,\u201d Whitsitt said Wednesday morning. \u201cThe project has giant support from the community and the council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Referred to as \u201cThe Contemporary,\u201d the new 10,000-square-foot TACAW facility is planned to sit on the southwest edge of Willits Town Center off of Willits Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The Contemporary will include a kitchen that can be used for catering events and cooking classes, a green room for performers and a community room, along with 30% more seating capacity than the temporary TACAW venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A concrete canopy will suspend over the main entrance of the new performing arts facility, and solar panels will line the roof to help The Contemporary produce most of the energy it requires, <a id=\"N0x1ca15d0N0x1ccc5c0:N0x1ca15d0N0x1cc1b58\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/basalt-officials-say-proposed-performing-arts-center-will-make-its-stamp-at-willits\/\">as previously reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">At the Tuesday night council meeting, the only concern with the performing arts center proposal was related to fencing on the south side of the development site, but was determined a \u201csolvable issue,\u201d according to Basalt Planning Director Susan Philp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe meeting was extremely positive, all of council is behind the art campus,\u201d Philp said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">If The Contemporary is approved, Philp also said the town has a funding agreement with TACAW to contribute $942,179 to the planned performing arts center development through a real estate transfer assessment that was established by Basalt Town Council in 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The assessment and the town arts land parcel The Contemporary is planned to sit on were designated specifically to facilitate and support a multi-disciplinary performing arts center in the Willits Town Center, according to town documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cTACAW was created specifically for the purpose of creating, managing and supporting a multi-disciplinary arts campus at the center of the Roaring Fork Valley,\u201d town Resolution No. 24 states. \u201cTACAW has provided a venue for film, music, education, culinary arts, performing arts and special events through the \u2018Temporary\u2019 space and now wishes to do so at the to-be constructed Arts Center on the Arts Parcel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In 2017, TACAW leased the arts parcel from town government for 99 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Town Council will do a second reading of The Contemporary proposal plan at its Sept. 24 meeting.
