{"id":2448719,"date":"2019-09-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=312833"},"modified":"2019-09-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-14T06:00:00","slug":"u-s-census-counting-on-temporary-workers-in-aspen-area","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/u-s-census-counting-on-temporary-workers-in-aspen-area\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Census counting on temporary workers in Aspen area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Dozens of <a id=\"N0x1c98930N0x1cd2030:N0x1c98930N0x1c99770\" href=\"https:\/\/2020census.gov\/en\/jobs\">jobs<\/a> are becoming available locally as the U.S. Census ramps up in advance of next spring\u2019s head count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe are looking for trusted voices in our communities,\u201d said Josh Manning, media specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">There are a wide variety of jobs related to the census, it\u2019s not just door knocking, added Philip Supino, an employee of the city of Aspen and part of the Aspen to Parachute Complete Count Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cOur complete count committee is doing whatever it can to promote those jobs,\u201d he said. \u201cIn Pitkin County, it\u2019s a couple dozen temporary workers and valley wide, we expect multiple dozens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><a id=\"N0x1c98930N0x1cd20f0:N0x1c98930N0x1c999f8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/citizenship-question-fears-appear-to-be-eased-as-aspen-to-parachute-census-committee-gears-\">Aspen to Parachute Complete Count Committee<\/a> has met twice in recent months in an effort to ensure everyone in the Roaring Fork and Grand River valleys are counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The committee is made up of individuals from government, nonprofits, the Latino sector of the population and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Membership continues to grow, Supino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The ad-hoc group meets again Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. in the Third Street Center in Carbondale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Topics on the agenda include identifying and reaching hard to count populations, public outreach and applying for Department of Local Affairs grant money to go toward the local effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe expect a good chunk of change,\u201d Supino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Manning, who works out of a census office in Montana, said he expects the government to hire many more people than the 2010 count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIn 2010 in Montana, 700 people were hired for the state and this time around it\u2019s going to be double or triple,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In March, households will receive a postcard in the mail encouraging people to go online and fill out the census form, according to Manning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">If people fail to do that, they will be reminded via a letter in the mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">And if that doesn\u2019t work, a census worker will come to their house for an in-person head count.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">State and local government funding is based on census and population data, which is why officials are emphasizing the importance of being counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">April 1 is Census Day.
