{"id":2449112,"date":"2019-09-24T21:15:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T03:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=313375"},"modified":"2019-09-24T21:15:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-25T03:15:00","slug":"aspens-electeds-to-meet-in-utah-next-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/aspens-electeds-to-meet-in-utah-next-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Aspen\u2019s electeds to meet in Utah next week"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/p><figcaption><strong>Aspen City Hall.<\/strong><br \/><em>Aspen Times file photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A majority of the Aspen City Council will travel to Park City, Utah, next week to network and build relationships with other mountain communities to act against climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Because council members Ann Mullins and Skippy Mesirow and Mayor Torre will be attending the conference together, it required the City Clerk\u2019s Office to publicly notice their meeting Oct. 2-4 because three of five elected officials will be gathering and it constitutes a quorum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While it\u2019s expected that officials representing communities attending the Mountain Town 2030 Summit will be asked to make a commitment on policies related to climate change, Torre said he and his colleagues won\u2019t be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">They will return to Aspen to discuss any possible commitments with the rest of their elected body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Chris Menges, the city\u2019s sustainability programs administrator who has worked on Aspen\u2019s <a id=\"N0x10182e0N0x120eb90:N0x10182e0N0x117dd40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspen-puts-a-cap-on-climate-change\/\">Climate Action Plan<\/a>, will join the elected officials at the summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Airfare, lodging and conference registration for Mesirow and Torre totals $2,050, and comes out of the City Council\u2019s budget and the Climate Action Office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Because of the last-minute decision for Mullins to go, she is paying her own way. She said she plans to drive and stay with friends in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Mullins said she\u2019s excited to hear the <a id=\"N0x10182e0N0x120ebf0:N0x10182e0N0x117df80\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/mountain-towns-2030-net-zero-summit-3-day-conference-event-registration-63119158101\">speakers who are lined up<\/a> for the summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI believe it\u2019s important that as many people as possible hear this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Torre said he thinks it\u2019s appropriate for the city to pay for Mullins\u2019 registration for the conference, which is about $319.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In preparation for the trip, Ashley Perl, the city\u2019s climate action manager, presented a few suggestions for council members to consider while at the summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Perl said Andy Beerman, mayor of Park City, will be pushing mountain communities to commit to being net zero by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Perl suggested to council that that it could consider an interim goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 50% below 2004 levels by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city\u2019s Climate Action Plan calls for reducing emissions by 30% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe analyzed what it takes for us to reach a 50% reduction by 2030,\u201d Perl said. \u201cI cannot sit here and say what it looks like to be net zero by 2030.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She also suggested that council could address in the future a specific program like composting, electric transportation or energy use in buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Perl said what the mountain communities attending the summit could benefit from is learning about Aspen\u2019s leadership and experience in climate change policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIf City Council wants to promote the theme of leadership and facilitation, this would most likely not take the form of a commitment or a formal goal but would rather be a narrative that Aspen can share with other towns attending the summit,\u201d Perl wrote in a <a id=\"N0x10182e0N0x120ec50:N0x10182e0N0x117e5b0\" href=\"https:\/\/d3n9y02raazwpg.cloudfront.net\/cityofaspen\/38caa921-2a35-11e9-b021-0050569183fa-c00eeb57-b7db-4763-8c17-174415a9ced9-1568990674.pdf\">memo to council<\/a>. \u201cBy encouraging others to reach out and lean into regional partners, Aspen can set a new norm for how local governments can work together to achieve more than working on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspens-electeds-to-meet-in-utah-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aspen City Hall.Aspen Times file photo A majority of the Aspen City Council will travel to Park City, Utah, next week to network and build relationships with other mountain communities to act against climate change.
