{"id":2449149,"date":"2019-09-25T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/?p=313306"},"modified":"2019-09-25T21:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T03:00:00","slug":"city-of-aspen-might-provide-incubator-workspace-in-city-hall-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alwaysmountaintime.com\/kspn\/local-news\/city-of-aspen-might-provide-incubator-workspace-in-city-hall-building\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Aspen might provide incubator workspace in City Hall building"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image p402_hide\">\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/04\/council-atd-072418-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\"><\/p><figcaption><strong>Aspen City Hall.<\/strong><br \/><em>Aspen Times file photo<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A majority of Aspen City Council wants dedicated space in the current City Hall so the government can provide work areas for incubator businesses or other community uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That was the direction given earlier this month to project managers in charge of programming the city\u2019s new 37,500-square-foot office building between Rio Grande Place and Galena Plaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As part of the <a id=\"N0x1207330N0x11485b0:N0x1207330N0x11428e0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspen-city-offices-grow-more-expensive-with-201k-change-order\/\">nearly $50 million<\/a> project, the current City Hall, also known the Armory, will be renovated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Council, with Mayor Torre in the minority, <a id=\"N0x1207330N0x1148610:N0x1207330N0x1142a00\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspen-city-council-chooses-to-hunker-down-in-new-building\/\">chose earlier this month to move council chambers<\/a> and other meeting space to the new building and lease the ground floor of the Armory to the Aspen Chamber Resort Association for its offices and visitor center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The basement of the Armory, where council chambers and the Sister Cities room are currently, would be set aside for \u201ccommunity uses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think it\u2019s suitable for incubator space,\u201d said Councilwoman Rachel Richards. \u201cThere seems to be an emphasis on giving room to the next generation of businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s about having options,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe have more demand for community space than we have room for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Council had previously directed staff to keep the Old P<a id=\"N0x1207330N0x1148670:N0x1207330N0x1142cd0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/aspens-electeds-want-old-power-house-to-return-to-community-use\/\">ower House building<\/a> on North Mill Street open in the future for community use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Currently that building houses ACRA and a few city departments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilman Ward Hauenstein said he\u2019d like to see that building used as a child care facility, which Aspen has a dearth of and is driving many families out of the community as a result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThat\u2019s a lot bigger community need to me than performance or community space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Hauenstein and his fellow council members want the new building to be 100% programmed for employees and designed efficiently so that there is room left over in the Armory to have a space open for public use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI like business incubator space or community uses in the Armory,\u201d Hauenstein said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Councilman Skippy Mesirow emphasized that the priority is to provide productive space for employees, but if there is room left over, he would like to see space for local businesses to set up shop in the Armory, or an indoor farmers market. He also said he wants child and infant care provided for the public so they can participate in government meetings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The current council chambers and Sister Cities room also could be designed as a multipurpose, flexible space, according to city officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">There is a shared workspace business <a id=\"N0x1207330N0x11486d0:N0x1207330N0x11431e0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/business-monday-aspen-investors-get-serious-about-office-space\/\">on Cooper Avenue<\/a>, and developer Mark Hunt plans to lease to a <a id=\"N0x1207330N0x1148730:N0x1207330N0x1143270\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/global-workspace-company-coming-to-aspen\/\">global workspace company<\/a> in the building he\u2019s redeveloping on Hopkins Avenue, just a couple hundred feet from the current council chambers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The renovations and additional offices are designed to provide adequate space for city employees to work and centralized locations for the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Currently, municipal employees are working in cramped office space in City Hall, or are spread throughout town in rented buildings that cost the local government more than $500,000 a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/city-of-aspen-might-provide-incubator-workspace-in-city-hall-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aspen City Hall.Aspen Times file photo A majority of Aspen City Council wants dedicated space in the current City Hall so the government can provide work areas for incubator businesses or other community uses.
