Aspen Filmfest crowds chose Mark Bozek\u2019s documentary \u201cThe Times of Bill Cunningham\u201d as their favorite movie of the 2019 festival.<\/p>\n

The profile of the late New York Times photographer won the Audience Award, Aspen Film announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Taika Waititi\u2019s \u201cJojo Rabbit\u201d also won an Audience Special Mention prize.<\/p>\n

Aspen Film executive and artistic director Susan Wrubel described the winners \u2014 chosen by audience ballot \u2014 as \u201cquite indicative of the mood and of the community and the politics of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The festival ran from Sept. 23 through Sunday and featured 23 movies, including some of the most anticipated and acclaimed from the festival circuit.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019The Times of Bill Cunningham\u2019 is a delightful and moving story of a behind-the-scenes cultural icon who brought joy to so many through his work,\u201d Wrubel said. \u201c\u2019Jojo Rabbit\u2019 is a film that certainly polarized the audience with its bold satire, however, its message of tolerance and understanding ultimately rang through.\u201d<\/p>\n

The festival drew crowds for screenings of titles like Terrance Malick\u2019s \u201cA Hidden Life,\u201d the Judy Garland biopic \u201cJudy,\u201d Bong-Joon Ho\u2019s \u201cParasite,\u201d documentary \u201cCracked Up,\u201d and buzzy prestige pictures like \u201cThe Report,\u201d \u201cSeberg,\u201d Honey Boy\u201d and \u201cThe Laundromat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAspen Film is so proud to have the ability to bring films of this caliber to this community,\u201d Wrubel said. \u201cThe response to Filmfest was overwhelming, and our films sparked a lot of dialogue, which is one of our goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

The festival also included the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Cinematic Arts to Bob Rafelson, the longtime Aspenite and ground-breaking director, producer and writer. The festival closed Sunday with a screening of his 1990 epic \u201cMountains of the Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n
