Aspen Words announced the longlist for the Aspen Words Literary Prize on Thursday. The titles include 12 novels and four short story collections to be considered for the literary nonprofit\u2019s $35,000 annual award for a work of fiction hat addresses a vital contemporary issue.<\/p>\n

The finalists are: \u201cOpioid, Indiana\u201d by Brian Allen Carr; \u201cYour House Will Pay\u201d by Steph Cha; \u201cDominicana\u201d by Angie Cruz; \u201cPatsy\u201d by Nicole Dennis-Benn; \u201cSabrina & Corina: Stories\u201d by Kali Fajardo-Anstine; \u201cThe Other Americans\u201d by Laila Lalami; \u201cThe Beekeeper of Aleppo\u201d by Christy Lefteri; \u201cLost Children Archive\u201d by Valeria Luiselli; \u201cThe Beadworkers: Stories\u201d by Beth Piatote; \u201cThe Affairs of the Falc\u00f3ns\u201d by Melissa Rivero; \u201cWe Cast a Shadow\u201d by Maurice Carlos Ruffin; \u201cThe World Doesn\u2019t Require You: Stories\u201d by Rion Amilcar Scott; \u201cOn Earth We\u2019re Briefly Gorgeous\u201d by Ocean Vuong; \u201cLot: Stories\u201d by Bryan Washington; \u201cThe Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead and \u201cRed at the Bone\u201d by Jacqueline Woodson.<\/p>\n

Six of the selections are by debut authors.<\/p>\n

The five finalists and winner will be selected by a five-member jury that includes writers Alexander Chee, Saeed Jones and Esmeralda Santiago along with the Aspen Institute\u2019s Amy Garmer and Aspenite Helen Obermeyer.<\/p>\n

\u201cFiction can help bridge divides across political, racial and socioeconomic lines,\u201d Aspen Words executive director Adrienne Brodeur said in the announcement. \u201cThis year\u2019s longlist includes titles that grapple with many of our biggest contemporary challenges\u2014racial injustice, family separation and immigration, opioid addiction. But they are also stories of triumph and hope\u2014a reckoning with colonial history, a reclamation of the American Dream, a reflection of human resiliency and a celebration of so many voices left out of conventional literature.\u201d<\/p>\n

Open to authors of any nationality, the award is one of the largest literary prizes in the United States, and one of the few focused exclusively on fiction with a social impact. The inaugural award was presented to Mohsin Hamid in 2018<\/a> for \u201cExit West,\u201d his novel about migration and refugees. Tayari Jones won the 2019 prize<\/a> for \u201cAn American Marriage,\u201d her novel about racism and unjust incarceration.<\/p>\n

The finalists will be announced on Feb. 19, and the winner will be revealed at an awards ceremony at The Morgan Library in New York City on April 16 In late spring 2020, Aspen Words, in partnership with Pitkin County Library, will launch a Community Read program and distribute free copies of the prize-winning book. The program will include a community-wide book club gathering, panel discussions and other activities.<\/p>\n
