A true Swiss mountain man at heart, Hans Widmer summited many peaks including Pyramid Peak, the Maroon Bells, the Matterhorn, the Todi \u201chis mountain\u201d and skied many more. Hans taught four generations of skiers starting with soldiers in Switzerland during WW2 through his great grandchildren. His teaching style often focused on shouting \u201cjust turn\u201d when asked by his grandchildren how to get down KT Gully. At 100 years old, he lived long enough to see backcountry skiing come back into fashion, though he did admit the gear greatly improved! Hans, a self-proclaimed bachelor until age 30, married Hedi Buchwalder August 2, 1949. Together, they shared their mutual joy of travel and exploration, welcoming three children along the way in their adventures. Their daughters were born in Switzerland and Borneo, and the family lived and traveled around the globe before retiring in Snowmass Village in 1987 because it was the \u201cbest.\u201d Hans passed away on November 9, 2019 surrounded by his family. Born on August 14, 1919, he turned 100 this summer and celebrated his milestone birthday with loved ones. Hans will be remembered for his stories, his ability to converse about any subject, and his most expressive and winning smile. He had a fascinating career in geology exploring regions in the world that are visited by few travelers. He was a keen negotiator and loved his life\u2019s work. Through Hans, we enjoyed a feast of nature, music, memories, food, and songs. He is survived by his daughters Eve, Charlotte and Brigitt, six grandkids and seven great-grandchildren and the century of stories by which we remember him.
