(Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times)<\/strong><br \/><em>Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">The next time you are sitting in traffic heading out of Aspen and don\u2019t want to let a car in that has passed you in the left lane, you should know you are doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Both local and state officials are <a id=\"N0x2dd5000N0x2bc2930:N0x2dd5000N0x2c283a0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dMnM_o2ZsaQ \">actively campaigning<\/a> to educate motorists on how to \u201czipper,\u201d also known as the late merge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cTwo lanes moving at the same time is actually faster,\u201d said City Engineer Trish Aragon. \u201cIt makes traffic flow better when you use both lanes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The city has a banner hung over Main Street at Fourth Street, encouraging people to zipper up ahead when the road goes from two lanes to one around the S-curves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Lisa Schwantes, regional communications manager at the Colorado Department of Transportation, said the state agency is actively educating people on the zippering concept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s a trend nationwide, promoted by the federal highway administration,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s something we really encourage because traffic flows faster and if traffic moves faster it\u2019s safer than the moment we put traffic at a standstill the chance of an accident greatly goes up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">CDOT focuses a lot of its late merge messaging around <a id=\"N0x2dd5000N0x2bc29f0:N0x2dd5000N0x2c28700\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/zipper-merge-please-to-keep-traffic-moving-colorado-wants-you-to-be-late-when-merging\/\">construction zones<\/a> because the natural inclination for people is to move into the open lane when they see that the road is going to narrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe are so used to, from a young age, to stay in line and we don\u2019t cut but we also are used to taking turns,\u201d Schwantes said. \u201cIt\u2019s not rude behavior to zipper merge.
