A winter storm forecast to start Thursday afternoon is predicted to dump over 2 feet of snow on the Aspen area through the weekend.\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption-toggle\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/here-it-comes-storms-forecast-to-drop-nearly-2-feet-of-snow-around-aspen-colorado-mountains\/#\" class=\"show-captions\">Show Captions<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/here-it-comes-storms-forecast-to-drop-nearly-2-feet-of-snow-around-aspen-colorado-mountains\/#\" class=\"hide-captions\">Hide Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Moisture coming from the Pacific Ocean and streaming into the West will have Aspen and other Colorado ski areas measuring snow accumulations in feet by the end of the weekend, according to forecast models.<\/p>\n<p>A winter storm warning runs from 11 a.m. Thursday until 5 p.m. Friday, then after a lull, the storm will pick up through the weekend, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"according to the National Weather Service (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=COZ010&amp;warncounty=COC097&amp;firewxzone=COZ205&amp;local_place1=Aspen%20CO&amp;product1=Winter+Storm+Watch&amp;lat=39.19&amp;lon=-106.8182#.XfJ6RtNKhTY\" target=\"_blank\">according to the National Weather Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnshore flow off the Pacific Ocean will accompany the upper-level energy aiding in producing rain and higher elevation snow from the Pacific Northwest\/Northern California eastward to the Northern\/Central Rockies through Saturday,\u201d the NWS said in an update Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>There are winter weather warnings and advisories for the Colorado mountains through Sunday and travel is expected to be difficult with wind gusts nearing 50 mph.<\/p>\n<p>The winter storm warning for the central and northern Colorado mountains \u2014 including Aspen, Snowmass Village and Pitkin County \u2014 calls for 6 to 12 inches of snow above 8,500 feet and locally higher amounts through Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>A winter storm watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. Additional accumulations of 8 to 14 inches are possible for the central and southern mountains from early Saturday morning through Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile light snow showers will continue Friday evening, snow intensity will not pick up again until toward midnight Friday night. All the mountains of western Colorado \u2026 will see periods of moderate snow through Sunday before showers taper off from north to south,\u201d the warning states.<\/p>\n<p>The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/avalanche.state.co.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"special avalanche advisory\u201d warning (opens in a new tab)\">special avalanche advisory\u201d warning<\/a> through the weekend with conditions expected to change quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDanger will increase through Friday and into the weekend as a potent storm will drop 1 to 2 feet of snow and 1 to 2 inches of water on a weak snowpack,\u201d according to the state agency\u2019s warning. \u201cAvalanche activity will increase and natural avalanches are likely as the storm progresses.
