The multidisciplinary artist Spencer Hansen has been on nearly a yearlong journey with Aspen\u2019s Skye Gallery.<\/p>\n

It began early this year with his popular \u201cPlease Play\u201d exhibition at the downtown space and continued with the Skye\u2019s first foray into the international frenzy surrounding Art Basel Miami, where the gallery presented Hansen\u2019s \u201cStrangers\u201d at Aqua Art Miami.<\/p>\n

On Saturday night, Hansen\u2019s new exhibition comes to Skye Gallery in downtown Aspen.<\/p>\n

As the title suggests, \u201cPlease Play\u201d encouraged viewers quite literally to play with Hansen\u2019s furry, bendable art objects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it inspires us to play with the creatures,\u201d he said at the opening in January. \u201cI don\u2019t want a static environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The works at that show were handmade sculptures \u2014 most of them made with bendable wire, foam and beads inside of woven stuffed animal exteriors.<\/p>\n

The uncanny new creatures featured in \u201cStrangers\u201d are unmistakably from the same imagination, though fashioned in wood, metal, ceramics, bone and leather.<\/p>\n

An interdisciplinary artist who graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, Hansen straddles the worlds of mass-produced toys, textiles and fine art. His toy line BLAMO makes otherworldly creatures that encourage play and look like nothing else you\u2019ll find in a toy store and his BLAMO clothing line includes Hansen\u2019s spin on hats, outerwear and the like along with playful onesies for adults.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been making creatures as long as I can remember,\u201d he said of the interrelated toy, fashion and art pieces. \u201cI think of them all as sort of cousins from a different planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Originally from rural Idaho, Hansen works out of a studio in Bali, which he and friends built out of recycled Javanes boat wood.<\/p>\n
