Mikey Day and Alex Moffat both joined the cast of \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in 2016, at the dawn of the show\u2019s era of Trump spoofs and satire.<\/p>\n

Celebrity guest impersonations have dominated in this stretch of \u201cSNL,\u201d from Alec Baldwin\u2019s burlesque Donald Trump to Melissa McCarthy\u2019s aggro Sean Spicer and Matt Damon\u2019s unhinged Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n

A breakout impression from the regular cast, however, has been Day and Moffet\u2019s comedy duo as Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump. The pair, who headline Aspen\u2019s Wheeler Opera House on Friday in what\u2019s billed as a \u201cBest of SNL\u201d presentation, have shown up as Don and Eric consistently in bits at the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d desk since early 2017.<\/p>\n

Their routine is classic old-school \u201cSNL\u201d political comedy, in the tradition of Chevy Chase\u2019s clumsy Gerald Ford and Dana Carvey\u2019s whining George H.W. Bush, cartoonishly over-exaggerating a character trait leaping from kernel of reality. Day and Moffet have solidified in the public imagination that Don Jr. is a slick and soulless Wall Street bro and that Eric is an empty-headed fool.<\/p>\n

Day\u2019s Junior is a talking-points-regurgitating \u201cAmerican Psycho\u201d send-up, a trust fund kid who didn\u2019t earn his swagger. While Moffat plays Eric like a hyperactive four-year-old trapped in a grown-up rich kid\u2019s body, riding a tricycle and eating Play-Doh and given to blurting out the Trump family truth when he\u2019s not supposed to. Moffat\u2019s Eric mimics his big brother\u2019s grown-up facial expressions and hand gestures, trying to earn his place at the adult table. Day and Moffat often play off one another like George and Lennie in \u201cOf Mice and Men,\u201d the knowing big brother Don frustrated but trying to protect the ignorant and childlike Eric as he struggles with potty-training and how to high-five.<\/p>\n

Their lampooning of the Trump man-children has been a highlight of the show\u2019s Trump bits.<\/p>\n

Back in summer 2017, when Don Jr.\u2019s Trump Tower campaign meeting with Russians was in the headlines, Day\u2019s Don stuck to the script that his dad told him \u201cSon, go out there and tell the truth,\u201d to which Moffat\u2019s Eric interjected \u201cAnd then he winked!\u201d<\/p>\n

In October 2018, as Day\u2019s Don talked up his big business moves and midterm election campaigning, Moffat\u2019s Eric chimed in proudly: \u201cAnd I had swim lessons!\u201d<\/p>\n

And this fall, Day\u2019s Don showed up to critique the Democrats vying for the presidential nomination such as Kamala Harris, beginning \u201cMy dad can\u2019t stand her because Harris is\u2026\u201d At which point Moffat\u2019s Eric jumped in to complete the sentence with \u201ca woman\u201d and \u201cblack.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this bitter and joyless political moment, unfortunately, the First Family isn\u2019t willing to take the ribbing. The Trump kids certainly won\u2019t be showing up on \u201cSNL\u201d to meet their satirical counterparts, the way George H.W. Bush once did.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got it wrong,\u201d Eric told the Washington Post<\/a> of Day and Moffat\u2019s impression last year. \u201cThey detest us and they will do anything to try and undermine our credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

So if the actual Trump kids jet to Aspen<\/a> again this holiday week, don\u2019t expect to see them at the Wheeler.<\/p>\n
