It was announced Monday that Snowmass Village will be the first of four stops on this year\u2019s Colorado Classic road race, which takes place in late August and concludes in Denver.<\/p>\n<p>This will only be the fourth running of the Colorado Classic, which made its debut in 2017. It effectively replaced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/no-usa-pro-challenge-in-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"short-lived USA Pro Cycling Challenge (opens in a new tab)\">short-lived USA Pro Cycling Challenge<\/a>, which ran from 2011 until 2015. Aspen had been a regular stop on the Pro Challenge, and major pro cycling hasn\u2019t returned to the area since that final race in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradoclassic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Colorado Classic (opens in a new tab)\">The Colorado Classic<\/a> began as a men\u2019s and women\u2019s event in 2017, but last year RPM Events Group, which owns and operates the race, dropped the men\u2019s race and made it a rare women\u2019s-only event. It\u2019s billed as North America\u2019s only stand-alone women\u2019s professional stage race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to have such a strong line-up of communities for the 2020 event. Each market offers a notable connection to pro cycling, an ideal landscape for competitive racing and a strong commitment to bringing unique and engaging events to their community,\u201d said Lucy Diaz, CEO of RPM Events Group, in a news release. \u201cEach partner also aligns with our mission to advance women in sports and we are excited to work together to build out programming around each race stage that celebrates the athletes and engages the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 Colorado Classic gets underway Aug. 27 in Snowmass Village. While the full routes haven\u2019t been announced, the news release said the 60-mile course in Snowmass \u201cwill be a dynamic one with screaming descents, punchy hills, two larger climbs with gravel sections and a climb to the finish.\u201d Of note, 10 of the 60 miles will be on gravel roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnowmass Village is a world renowned destination for biking,\u201d Rose Abello, director of Snowmass Tourism, said in the news release. \u201cWe were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/roaring-fork-valley-receives-gold-level-recognition-for-mountain-biking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"recently designated as an IMBA Gold-Level Ride Center (opens in a new tab)\">recently designated as an IMBA Gold-Level Ride Center<\/a> for our mountain biking, and we look forward to shining a light on our fabulous road riding by having pro women enjoy Snowmass and the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Snowmass, the race moves to Avon, which also hosted the second stage of the 2019 race. Stage 3 on Aug. 29 will be in Boulder, with the race wrapping up Aug. 30 in Denver.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s Colorado Classic was dominated from start to finish by Indiana\u2019s Chloe Dygert, an Olympic silver medalist (2016) who rides for Sho-Air TWENTY20.
