As he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/how-a-bob-dylan-musical-finally-got-off-the-ground-253330\/\">told&nbsp;<em>Rolling Stone&nbsp;<\/em>in 2017,<\/a> he was sent Dylan\u2019s complete catalog so he could upload it on his iPod, shuffle the tracks, and hear all the classics and the lesser-known treasures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never wanted a standard musical,\u201d McPherson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/how-a-bob-dylan-musical-finally-got-off-the-ground-253330\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a Bob musical. Once you say that, all bets are off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The play \u2014 which premiered in London in 2017 and ran on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/broadway\/\" id=\"auto-tag_broadway\" data-tag=\"broadway\">Broadway<\/a> until COVID-19 closures \u2014 takes place in Dylan\u2019s hometown of Duluth, Minnesota, during the Great Depression. In it, a dysfunctional family called the Laines lives and tends to a boardinghouse, which hosts a boxer (Joe Scott) and a sleazy preacher (Rev. Marlowe), among other guests. The characters express their thoughts during the show through Dylan\u2019s poetic lyrics, as with the song \u201cTight Connection to My Heart,\u201d off of Dylan\u2019s <em>Empire Burlesque<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d \u2018Tight Connection\u2019 for me was the thing that really sort of connected me not only to this piece, but reconnected me to my love of Dylan,\u201d says Marc Kudisch, who plays Mr. Burke, a boardinghouse resident who lost all his money in the stock market crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d \u2018Tight Connection to My Heart\u2019 was such a departure from the way it was on the record in the Eighties,\u201d adds Mare Winningham, who plays Elizabeth Laine alongside Jay O.
