The celebration will include video content premiering across Aspen Words\u2019 and the Aspen Institute\u2019s social platforms and websites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Some of the Aspen Words Literary Prize judges, including Esmeralda Santiago and Alexander Chee, will interview the finalist authors about their books and writing careers (7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Aspen Institute President Dan Porterfield and Aspen Words executive director Adrienne Brodeur will discuss the role of literature during this time of global pandemic (2 p.m.).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The celebration will culminate with the naming of the prize winner at 4 p.m..<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">In the weeks leading up to the announcement, Aspen Words has partnered with the Instagram account @fictionmatters to launch a reading challenge centered around the finalist titles. Aspen Words also will encourage readers to participate in the celebration on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using #AspenLitPrize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Four novels and one short story collection are in the running for the 2020 award, to be presented in collaboration with media partner NPR Books: \u201cOpioid, Indiana\u201d by Brian Allen Carr (Soho Press); \u201cPatsy\u201d by Nicole Dennis-Benn (Liveright); \u201cThe Beekeeper of Aleppo\u201d by Christy Lefteri (Ballantine Books); \u201cLost Children Archive\u201d by Valeria Luiselli (Knopf); and \u201cLot by Bryan Washington\u201d (Riverhead Books).<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">This is the third year the Aspen Words Literary Prize will be conferred. For its first two years, the prize was awarded live at a ceremony at The Morgan Library in New York City. <a id=\"N0x17ddd70N0x16be570:N0x17ddd70N0x18b06b8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/novelist-mohsin-hamid-discusses-aspen-literary-prize-winning-exit-west\/\">Mohsin Hamid received the inaugural award<\/a> in April 2018 for \u201cExit West,\u201d his novel about migration and refugees. <a id=\"N0x17ddd70N0x16be5d0:N0x17ddd70N0x18b0748\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/novelist-tayari-jones-on-her-aspen-words-literary-prize-winning-an-american-marriage\/\">Tayari Jones received the 2019 award<\/a> for \u201cAn American Marriage,\u201d her novel about wrongful incarceration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Aspen Words decided to take the 2020 winner announcement online due to safety concerns about COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is an exciting opportunity for us to reimagine what a literary prize awards ceremony can look like and how we can engage with a wider audience,\u201d Brodeur said in the announcement. \u201cWe believe even though everyone is social distancing, it\u2019s still possible to have a collective moment of connection and celebration through great literature.
