(Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times)\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption-toggle\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/snowmass\/village-voices-whats-up-with-the-tiger-in-base-village\/#\" class=\"show-captions\">Show Captions<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/snowmass\/village-voices-whats-up-with-the-tiger-in-base-village\/#\" class=\"hide-captions\">Hide Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">If you\u2019ve driven through the P2 level of the Base Village parking garage, chances are you\u2019ve met the #BaseVillageTiger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">A life-sized big cat made of solid wood with its own Instagram hashtag, the Base Village tiger has sat as the hidden gem of the parking garage for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">But about a month ago, the tiger made its debut above ground in Base Village and will now sit in front of Straight Line Studio as an evolving piece of art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI\u2019ve been looking at that tiger in the parking garage all year and saying, \u2018I want that,\u2019\u201d said Kelly Peters of Straight Line Studio. \u201cEveryone asks about it but no one seems to have any concrete answers on where it came from.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=news%20article&amp;utm_campaign=donation\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For this month\u2019s Town Talk, Peters suggested the Snowmass Sun look at the tiger\u2019s origins and how it ended up in the Base Village parking garage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The first people the Sun reached out to were Dawn Blasberg, plaza and events manager for Base Village, and Sara Halferty, curator for The Collective, as they both work for East West Partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Halferty said when she and East West first started asking questions about the tiger, rumor was it guarded the entrance of a circus that passed through the village and was left behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">However after talking with a knowledgeable Snowmass Mountain Lodging staff member, Halferty said the tiger\u2019s most accurate origins can be traced back to Junk and Liquid Sky, a restaurant and club that was in Base Village for the 2008-09 winter season. The tiger was left behind and has been in the village ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always been fascinated by the tiger but no one really knew where it came from,\u201d Halferty said, noting she and many other refer to the cat as El Tigre and that many photos have been taken with it in the parking garage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">With the recent revitalization of Base Village, Halferty has been looking for a new above ground home for the tiger but hadn\u2019t found the right fit. That\u2019s why when Peters and Teal Wilson, the artists who run Straight Line Studio, asked if they could have it, Halferty was beyond excited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThey\u2019re the perfect people to take over El Tigre,\u201d Halferty said. \u201cI can\u2019t say enough about how our passion is to help local artists and inspire creativity, which this is a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Before stringent social distancing measures were implemented locally to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, Peters said the tiger was a hit with kids and pretty much everyone who walked by her studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Once the Pitkin County stay-at-home public health order is lifted and Straight Line Studio is able to reopen, Peters said she hopes to have each artist who hosts a show at the studio paint the tiger in a new way \u2014 and to keep learning more about its mysterious history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe want the tiger to be a constant art experience and to just keep painting it,\u201d Peters said. \u201cI mean why not?
