The start of the season has been delayed two weeks to July 16.\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"caption-toggle\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/aspen-music-festival-delays-season-two-weeks-will-start-july-16\/#\" class=\"show-captions\">Show Captions<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/aspen-music-festival-delays-season-two-weeks-will-start-july-16\/#\" class=\"hide-captions\">Hide Captions<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText DropCap\">The Aspen Music Festival and School has canceled the first two weeks of its summer season due to societal disruptions from the novel coronavirus, pushing the opening concert from July 2 to July 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The season is still scheduled to end Aug. 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The festival is expected to make an announcement about this shortened six-week season Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe want to do the very most we can do,\u201d Fletcher said Tuesday of retaining six weeks of concerts, education and events. \u201cWe are hopeful in both the correct and incorrect sense of the word.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=news%20article&amp;utm_campaign=donation\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">This is the latest in a cascade of Aspen-area event cancellations since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, with major cancellations now extending from mid-March to mid-July and also including Aspen Skiing Co.\u2019s Spring Jam, the <a id=\"N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d2c8b0:N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d36728\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-food-wine-cancelled\/\">Food &amp; Wine Classic<\/a> and <a id=\"N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d2c910:N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d367b8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-ideas-festival-cancels-2020-event-because-of-coronavirus\/\">Aspen Ideas Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The executive committee of the festival\u2019s board of trustees made the decision Monday, Fletcher said. The rescheduled start date was set based on input from the festival\u2019s global network along with its administration, with insights from public health experts, museum directors, operas and orchestras in Asia, Europe and North America, and from other summer music festivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe are all talking to each other and all feeling like we are truly colleagues and not competitors,\u201d Fletcher said of fellow summer presenting and performing festivals. \u201cWe will truly be together on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Fletcher estimated the loss of earned income for the nonprofit from the cancellations to be in the range of $1 million. Total revenue for 2018 was $16.7 million, according to the festival\u2019s 2019 annual report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Fletcher expressed confidence in the institution\u2019s ability to persevere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWith the board\u2019s support, we are feeling the public and donors will stay with us, and we will be OK,\u201d Fletcher said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">While the Music Festival\u2019s Roaring Fork Valley after-school music instruction programs all went virtual this week, the festival is not planning virtual curricula in place of the two canceled weeks of the season in July. Extending the end of the season for students is also difficult, as most students are returning to conservatory programs elsewhere in late August. Fletcher did leave open the door, however, to the possibility of some additional programming for students and the public on the tail end of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The canceled first two weeks of the season were to include premier events from the season, <a id=\"N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d2c970:N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d36c38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-music-festival-announces-2020-season-of-uncommon-women-and-beethoven\/\">themed to celebrate Beethoven and \u201cUncommon Women of Note,\u201d<\/a> including a July 5 performance by soprano Ren\u00e9e Fleming with the Aspen Festival Orchestra in the Benedict Music Tent and the launch of <a id=\"N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d2c9d0:N0x1b9b5d0N0x1d36cc8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/aspen-music-school-announces-new-opera-program-with-renee-fleming-patrick-summers\/\">Fleming\u2019s and Patrick Summers\u2019 redesigned opera program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">But Fletcher said the extant July 16 to Aug. 23 season may include some concerts and educational programs rescheduled from the canceled portion of the season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The delayed start, festival officials believe, will allow time for public health restrictions on travel and gatherings to loosen, and will allow for the season to proceed safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWhile uncertainty still rules the day,\u201d Fletcher said in a draft of the announcement, \u201cthis delay reflects our ability, nearly four months out, to plan effectively and remain flexible in a dynamic situation. We will be actively monitoring developments, and we will revisit this in mid-May to be more certain of the feasibility of this plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The festival\u2019s refund and exchange policy has been amended for the season, offering patrons refunds due to the changed schedule and other circumstances.
