(Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times)<\/strong><br \/><em>Kelsey Brunner\/The Aspen Times<\/em><\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo said Thursday that local law enforcement will be stepping up their efforts to enforce the local \u201cstay at home\u201d <a id=\"N0x21e0500N0x23874f0:N0x21e0500N0x23ca470\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/pitkin-county-lengthens-stay-at-home-order-to-april-30-limits-group-down-to-5-people\/\">public health order<\/a> that limits gatherings to five or fewer, the closure of non-essential businesses and the mandate of staying 6 feet apart from one another to slow the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">DiSalvo has a unified front on public health order enforcement with police chiefs from Basalt, Snowmass Village and Aspen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cYou should know that all four agencies will be using <a id=\"N0x21e0500N0x2387550:N0x21e0500N0x23ca620\" href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/olls\/crs2017-title-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado revised statute 25-1-516<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> to enforce the Pitkin County Public Health order,\u201d he said during Thursday\u2019s community meeting. \u201cSadly, you\u2019ve seen some behaviors that are incredibly thoughtless, as well as potentially dangerous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe will not hesitate to arrest and summons individuals who make poor choices that invade your fellow community members or first responders.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">That was the case earlier this week when a <a id=\"N0x21e0500N0x23875b0:N0x21e0500N0x23ca7d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/coronavirus-stress-leads-aspen-man-to-cough-in-womans-face\/ \">local man was charged with disorderly conduct<\/a> after coughing in a woman\u2019s face on the Rio Grande Trail. She had asked him to move away from her to follow the physical-distancing guideline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">DiSalvo noted that summonses issued going forward will unlikely lead to jail time but \u201cwe will not hesitate to write tickets, especially for those who are egregiously irresponsible when it comes to the spread of this disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">DiSalvo, who is in quarantine at his Aspen home with his wife, Marcy, who has COVID-19 symptoms, said the more people comply with the order, the sooner life can return to normalcy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIn the last nine days and being quarantined in my home with my wife. \u2026 I believe in flattening the curve,\u201d he said. \u201cI think this is something that will work. I think we can expect that this will be the new normal for the next four to six weeks and I firmly believe that the more time that we spend inside flattening this curve, the quicker we will get back to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">He added that he wants there to be a national stay-at-home order, and that Pitkin County came out with one of the most aggressive ones even before the state of Colorado.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cI think I am living proof that no one is exempt from this virus,\u201d DiSalvo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Aspen Police Chief Richard Pryor, Snowmass Village Police Chief Brian Olson, Basalt Police Chief Greg Knott and DiSalvo <a id=\"N0x21e0500N0x2387670:N0x21e0500N0x23cabc0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AspenPolice\/photos\/a.196701004676\/10157304808139677\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">penned a letter to the public<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i> that says while most residents appreciate law enforcement\u2019s community policing approach, it\u2019s up to people to take the need to restrict themselves from essential activities seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">The four agencies are working together with staffing, and have plans in place that if one of the departments gets hit with the virus worse than another, they will loan each other staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cSo you may see different uniforms in the community but we\u2019re not there yet, but we do have contingency plans for that,\u201d DiSalvo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Pitkin County commissioners met in executive session Thursday to discuss enforcement of the public health order and get advice from counsel on how to carry it out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThis is all new,\u201d said County Manager Jon Peacock. \u201cAs the orders get more strict, enforcement is more of a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText Tagline\"><a href=\"mailto:csackariason@aspentimes.com\">csackariason@aspentimes.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/news\/local\/pitkin-county-sheriff-to-aspen-community-comply-with-health-order-or-face-summonses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">via:: The Aspen Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pitkin County Open Space and Trails ranger Pryce Hadley puts a new social distancing sign at the trailhead of Smuggler Mountain Road on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.
