The in-person festival, held annually at the Wheeler Opera House, was canceled due to public health restrictions during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The private online festival, hosted on the Paris-based Festival Scope platform, preserved the festival\u2019s Oscar-qualifying status in five award categories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">This year\u2019s list of Award winners includes nine films from nine different countries. The Audience Award went to documentarian <a id=\"N0x1c75640N0x1e7df30:N0x1c75640N0x1d81040\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/aspen-shortsfest-2020-flower-punk-takes-bouquets-to-space-and-the-deep-sea\/\">Alison Klayman\u2019s \u201cFlower Punk,\u201d<\/a> about Japanese artist Azuma Makoto. Other award highlights include \u201cA Youth,\u201d a Shortsfest world premiere garnering the Best Documentary award, and <a id=\"N0x1c75640N0x1e7df90:N0x1c75640N0x1d810d0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/aspen-shortsfest-2020-inside-the-making-of-the-mind-blowing-bag\/\">\u201cBag,\u201d a film by Colorado-born and New York-based artist and animator Robin Frohardt<\/a> which was honored with both The Ellen Award, and a Jury Award Special Mention for Animation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">For the third year, Aspen Film presented the Vimeo Staff Pick Award, a prestigious honor from the creator-first platform and a live iteration of Vimeo\u2019s Staff Picks laurel. Beyond the impending cataclysm, the film\u2019s portrayal of the personal tragedy of lost love and the possibility of rekindling it deftly shows us that once our mundane burdens lose meaning, we can focus on what really matters,\u201d reads the statement from Shortsfest\u2019s competition jury, consisting of critic and journalist Carlos Aguilar; Canal+ acquisitions executive Pascale Faure; and producer Marie Therese Guirgis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention for Comedy<\/strong>: <a id=\"N0x1c75640N0x1e7e050:N0x1c75640N0x1d81550\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/entertainment\/aspen-shortsfest-2020-snl-alum-rachel-dratch-in-marcy-learns-something-new\/\">\u201cMarcy Learns Something New\u201d<\/a> (USA), directed by Julia Kennelly<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cThe film offers us a very unexpected vision of a middle-aged woman who finds her way through the practice of SM,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cA skillful script and original characters make this fictional tale a story for consenting adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Best Drama<\/strong>: \u201cBablinga\u201d (France), directed by Fabien Dao (Not screened in the virtual festival)<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention for Drama<\/strong>: \u201cI\u2019ll End Up In Jail\u201d (Canada), directed by Alexandre Dostie<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt\u2019s rare to discover a truly original filmmaking voice and even rarer to have no idea what\u2019s going to happen from one moment to the next while watching a film,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cA delight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Best Animation<\/strong>: \u201cAnd Then The Bear\u201d (France), directed by Agnes Patron (Not screened in the virtual festival)<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention for Animation<\/strong>: \u201cBag\u201d (USA), directed by Robin Frohardt<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cThe originality of the technique joins the theme of the film, an animation made with recycled materials that tells us the tragedy of a plastic bag,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cThe result is a cinematic symbol of a new ecological consciousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Best Documentary<\/strong>: \u201cA Youth\u201d (UK, Italy, Greece), directed by Giorgio Bosisio<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cThere have been a number of recent documentaries depicting the lives of refugees in Greece and other European countries,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cBut \u2018A Youth\u2019 never \u2018others\u2019 nor pities its subjects. We care about them because they are, essentially, so much like us. We respect them because they are braver than we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention for Documentary<\/strong>: \u201cThe Starr Sisters\u201d (USA), directed by Bridey Elliott, Beth Einhorn<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cThis film captures an unforgettable moment alongside these incredible sisters,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cThey tell us their stories of life \u2013 even the most intimate ones \u2014 and give us an inspiring lesson of freedom!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Best Short Short<\/strong>: \u201cSomething To Remember\u201d (Sweden), directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cAs melancholic as it is bewildering, this exquisitely achieved stop-motion creation finds profound humanity in its animal protagonists through an eerily soothing song,\u201d reads the jury statement. \u201cIt\u2019s a bittersweet, bite-size confection that blew us away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention for Short Short<\/strong>: Asmahan The Diva (France), directed by Chloe Mazlo<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cWe would have happily watched another hour of this lovely, clever, fascinating, and moving film,\u201d reads the jury statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Best Student Short<\/strong>: \u201cHeading South\u201d (China, USA), directed by Yuan Yuan (Not screened in the virtual festival)<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>Special Mention<\/strong>: \u201cNo Crying At The Dinner Table\u201d (Canada), directed by Carol Nguyen<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"> \u201cFormally intelligent and deeply emotionally affecting, this film gives viewers such a strong sense of each character in such a short time and we cared about all of them,\u201d reads the jury statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\"><strong>The Ellen Award<\/strong>: \u201cBag\u201d (USA), directed by Robin Frohardt<\/p>\n<p><strong>Youth Jury Award<\/strong>: \u201cThe Manchador\u201d (Norway, Germany), directed by Kaveh Therani<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe relevant themes of the male gaze and women\u2019s autonomy pertain to not only our generation, but the whole world,\u201d reads the citation from a jury consisting of local students Mac Lampe, Riley MacArthur, Haver Muss, Sebastian Pedinielli, Harper Rafelson, Richie Simeone and Tilly Swanson. \u201cWhile the film focuses on Middle Eastern religious practices, we see the objectification of women in our society and generation today. We appreciate the implementation of comedy and satire around this serious topic. The role reversal, in limiting men\u2019s freedom instead of women, opens the door to a conversation around this issue with a new and creative take.
