If the strong, westerly winds present on Tuesday had returned on Wednesday afternoon, the fire would have posed a greater threat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIf we would have had those winds, it would have blown toward those houses,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Firefighters were able to get within about 150 yards of the flames from the nearest roadway. They had to hoof it with gear from there. The fire also burned toward snow-covered ground at the top of the knoll. The fire department responded with four engines and 15 firefighters. They were on the scene for about 2\u00bd hours. Less than one acre burned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cThe unfortunate thing is we can\u2019t find the reason why it started,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cI\u2019m one hundred percent sure is was human caused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">There was no telltale sign of the cause such as a cigarette butt. He said he couldn\u2019t rule out an intentional start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">As firefighters wrapped up that effort, a second call of a wildland fire came in at 6:15 p.m. An electrical breaker \u201cpopped\u201d on a power line near the Emma school. Sparks ignited dry grass along a fence line and ditch along Sopris Creek Road. Thompson credited a worker at Two Roots Farm, adjacent to the schoolhouse land, for extinguishing the fire before firefighters arrived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">Two Roots Farm owner Harper Kaufman said it was fortunate she was still around the farm when the fire broke out. She had left for the day but returned to put out garbage. She was hauling trash out to the road with a tractor when she saw smoke and flames.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">\u201cIt was getting quite big quite quickly,\u201d she said. She estimated the fire had spread to a patch 20 feet wide with flames up to her waist when she reached it. \u201cEnough to scare me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"STND-STND BodyText\">She grabbed a trashcan lid and started stomping out the flames.
