One of the&nbsp;most fun rabbit holes to hide&nbsp;out in during these long days is vintage Aspen, which thanks&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/348676301237\/?epa=SEARCH_BOX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">private Facebook group<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i>&nbsp;\u201cFriends of Aspen from the 1960\u2019s and 70\u2019s,\u201d there\u2019s&nbsp;a coronavirus- uptick of content to help escape the&nbsp;reality that is 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Culling through posts from&nbsp;the long list of locals that came before us, a true virtual sense of community comes through on-screen with old friends and&nbsp;acquaintances checking in on each&nbsp;other, retelling wild stories from the&nbsp;good old days, sharing snapshots&nbsp;from family photo albums, and&nbsp;directing members to&nbsp;archive&nbsp;articles and film footage.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite find so far is from&nbsp;the March 5, 1971 issue of LIFE&nbsp;magazine \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=31MEAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA62&amp;source=gbs_toc_r&amp;cad=2#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" class>a feature spread<\/a>&nbsp;introducing the world to \u201cAspen\u2019s&nbsp;New Kind of Ski Bum\u201d (girls!&nbsp;gasp!).&nbsp;Photographed by John Dominis,&nbsp;these women pioneered the path to&nbsp;living life at its highest and inspired&nbsp;future generations of us that \u201cwe&nbsp;can do&nbsp;anything guys do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Aspen Journalism\u2019s&nbsp;\u201cAspen\u2019s Skiing History\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspenjournalism.org\/2017\/01\/11\/aspen-ski-history-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">timeline<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i>,&nbsp;\u201csurfer bums\u201d discovered Aspen&nbsp;between 1960 and 1968 and in 1965,&nbsp;the Denver Post&nbsp;dubbed the all-&nbsp;male transplants as \u201cski-niks.\u201d LIFE&nbsp;reported that by 1971, six out of&nbsp;ten of the 900 new annual arrivals&nbsp;were women. One of the earliest&nbsp;cannabis kerfuffles on-mountain&nbsp;also went down that&nbsp;same winter&nbsp;season LIFE was on-assignment in&nbsp;high country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col\">\n<div class=\"row at-donation at-donation-mobile p-0\">\n<div class=\"col-xl-4 p-2\">\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png)\" class=\"p-0 mt-2 mb-2 h-75 text-center rocket-lazyload\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/AT-logo-white.png\" class=\"logo m-0 p-0 invisible\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-bg=\"url(https:\/\/cdn.aspentimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/03\/at-banner-paypal.jpg)\" class=\"col-xl-8 p-3 text-center rocket-lazyload\">\n<h3 class=\"d-inline mr-3\">Support Local Journalism<\/h3>\n<p><button class=\"btn d-inline\" type=\"button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspentimes.com\/donate\/?utm_source=article&amp;utm_medium=website&amp;utm_campaign=donation&amp;utm_term=&amp;utm_content=mid-article\">Donate<\/a><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe first-ever \u2018Hot-Dog Contest\u2019&nbsp;dominated the Ridge of Bell under&nbsp;the Bell Mountain lift on March 1,&nbsp;1971 where the only rule was to go top to bottom as&nbsp;spectacularly as&nbsp;possible. On a razor-blue day 2,000&nbsp;irreverent spectators watched 89&nbsp;local competitors rip. Ski instructor Sid Erickson won by popping&nbsp;\u2018Sealander\u2019s Rock\u2019 at the top skier\u2019s&nbsp;left of the steep Ridge, before flying&nbsp;over all the bumps in three turns, performing a never-before-seen&nbsp;stunt of luck and&nbsp;skill. A wet T-shirt&nbsp;contest followed at the Red Onion&nbsp;night club. D.R.C. Brown rode over&nbsp;the extravaganza. After smelling&nbsp;marijuana, he later declared there&nbsp;would \u201cnever be another hot-dog&nbsp;contest on a Ski Corp&nbsp;mountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spring tradition endured&nbsp;and is&nbsp;<a class href=\"http:\/\/www.aspensnowmassshrines.com\/index.php?the-buckaroo-shrine-aspen-mountain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">now held in April<\/a><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i>, known as&nbsp;the \u201cBell Mountain Buck-Off.\u201d This&nbsp;season would have marked its 49th&nbsp;year and since we\u2019re all sitting at&nbsp;home, let\u2019s look&nbsp;forward to the 50th&nbsp;in 2021 and plan to pay homage to&nbsp;the debauchery of decades past.&nbsp;And here\u2019s to Aspen\u2019s OG ski bum&nbsp;babes, may we all live as free (and be&nbsp;as cool) as them someday soon.<\/p>\n<p>For more throwback photos, vintage videos and nostalgic news stories, I\u2019ve rounded up a few more of my favorite links for you here:<\/p>\n<p><em>Special thanks to David C.
